Modern Love: My Five-Week-Long First Date - The New York Times

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Once I joined him on that ship for the Antarctic, there was no turning back.

“Wind twenty knots,” he wrote. “Thinking of you.”

“Sent via High Seas satellite phone,” read the email footer. “Please keep replies short.”

He was somewhere off Antarctica, a place he had been dozens of times, aboard a no-frills tourist ship where he was the expedition leader. There was a separate captain and crew, but he directed the itinerary, oversaw the staff and guides, and was responsible for 50 well-heeled passengers who had shelled out five figures to chug across 2,000 nautical miles of hostile Southern Ocean to a distant land of ice and snow.

“Thinking aloud,” he wrote in January, “I have no idea what your diary looks like for April, but I could come to California for a couple weeks. I would be interested in some hiking in national parks.”

I agreed, but soon he wrote with a new proposition: He would buy me a plane ticket to the Solomon Islands, and we would sail around in a 20-foot open boat, exploring atolls and bays and camping on the beach.

“Maggie,” he wrote, “I know this is a big ask for a first date. I nervously await your reply. Have I pushed the boat out too far?”

He asked if I had any concerns, and I did. They included (but were not limited to) sunburn, saltwater crocodiles, unexploded ordnance from World War II, and the simple but daunting possibility that, once alone on a small boat, he and I might discover we didn’t actually like each other. We’d never even kissed. We were basically strangers, and he was 30 years older than I was. I was 32.

[Sign up for Love Letter, our weekly email about Modern Love, weddings and relationships.]

One of my friends called him Old Salt; another, the Ancient Mariner. His life was so adventurous that, in my mind, the concept of age didn’t really apply. He lived mostly on ships and spent his free time snowmobiling across Siberia.

I had met him on a trip he’d led to the remote subantarctic islands scattered south of New Zealand. Though scoured by wind, the islands are relatively temperate and abound with life: giant prehistoric-looking flowers, thousands of king penguins, blindingly white southern royal albatrosses with nearly 12-foot wingspans.

I felt full of life there, too, invigorated by the wildness. Seemingly immune to the seasickness that felled many passengers, I spent hours in the bridge watching the bow crash over the swells.

Midway through the two-week trip, I began to wonder if he had a crush on me. No, I must be imagining things. And even if I wasn’t, could I seriously consider someone so much older, so salty? But my infatuation with the subantarctic had cracked me open, and he was very much of these islands. On one, he had rediscovered a species of bird previously thought extinct. On another, he had acquired a scar on his knee from a sea lion bite. Sometimes when he talked about subantarctic wildlife, he teared up.

As I sat in the ship’s bar with some Irish filmmakers — the only other passengers well under retirement age — he brought me small gifts, as courting penguins will offer pebbles to potential mates: extra bowls of potato chips, a book he had co-written.

The filmmakers smirked at me.

“Is it crazy that I think I’m interested?” I asked them.

On our last night, I sought him out, curious if he would make a move. Our conversation was awkward at best, but in the course of it he told me about arriving by night at an encampment of Chukchi reindeer herders in Siberia. Above a vast herd of thousands of animals and the thin frozen cloud of their breath, twisting sheets of green aurora had filled the sky.

Never before had I so envied another person’s memory. My internal compass swung toward him and stuck.

When I left the ship, I decided that if I was still thinking about him in a week, I would take action. On day eight, I sent an email casually inquiring about coming along on one of his Siberian trips to write about it. The logistics didn’t work, but soon we were trying to figure out where and when we could meet instead.

I said yes to the Solomon Islands, but the plan was derailed by a scheduling conflict. He wrote back the next day. He would return from Antarctica in two weeks, restock and refuel, pick up new passengers and depart again. Did I want to come along?

“You won’t like his body,” my mother said when I told her I was going on a five-week-long first date to an ice-covered continent with someone nearly her age. “It won’t be what you’re used to.” Ominously, she added, “You won’t like his toenails.”

When I left, it was winter in Los Angeles, and when I arrived, it was summer in Invercargill, a port city at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island. He was in the tiny terminal, looking nervous, wearing a polo shirt with his company’s logo embroidered on the breast and clutching three red roses in cellophane.

As he kissed me briefly on the mouth, I wondered if we would have sex that night. I couldn’t fathom it. He seemed utterly unknown. The reality hit me that, once the ship sailed, I would have no way of turning back.

As we drove to the docks, he held my hand and explained that he’d put me in a passenger cabin with a nice Kiwi lady, and, also, he’d decided it would be best if I functioned as a staff member. That way, he wouldn’t seem to be involved with a passenger, and I could eat with the staff and generally have a more interesting time.

I was presented with an embroidered polo shirt of my own. We agreed I would tend bar, herd people along on the hikes, and do whatever else my modest skill set would allow.

This seemed like a great idea, as I had no interest in being a freeloader or concubine, and I craved the legitimacy of being part of the team. But when I boarded, awkwardness overwhelmed me. While the other staff members were kind, I could see the truth in how they looked at me: I was the girlfriend. I tucked the roses into my bag.

I can’t tell the whole story of a first date that could have been a disaster but instead turned out to be the risk that has inspired my subsequent risks, a leap into something wildly uncertain, something that didn’t last but expanded my world in ways beyond latitude. I came to covet his competence and intrepidness, and I realized my task was not to glom onto him but to foster those qualities in myself, to go out into the world in pursuit of what moves me.

I can’t tell the whole story because it’s too long. But if I could, I would tell you how he took me into a forest of gnarled ironwood trees, where red flowers fallen from their branches carpeted the ground and penguins and sea lions peeked from behind moss-covered logs. I would tell you about ice-covered seas and penguins porpoising out of black water. I would tell you about the love notes he left on my pillow. I would assure you that, actually, he hadn’t been sure we would sleep together on the trip at all, but I would admit too that in the first week, my skittishness had alchemized into powerful desire.

On the surface, we struggled to connect, but something buried and wordless pulled us together. To explain it would have been as impossible as explaining why we both loved the sea, the wild animals, the raw landscapes. After each day’s work was done, as we sailed ever farther from my known world, I would go to his cabin and climb into his bunk while 20-foot swells rolled the ship and the perpetual twilight of the Antarctic summer lingered over the sea.

Since I can’t tell you about all that, I don’t have to explain how things fell apart, either. I don’t have to get into how antsy he was in the domesticated, urban spaces where I spend most of my life, or how he had trouble incorporating me into his world, too. I won’t tell you that the last night we spent together was in an RV in Alaska, parked beside the dog yard of a man who would later win the Iditarod, or that I woke in the night to a hundred sled dogs howling together, an unearthly, inscrutable vortex of sound.

As he slept on beside me, undisturbed, I thought of how this memory would be only mine: the lavender night, the sleeping man, the sky swirling with dog music.

CBS Studios delays production for five TV shows in LA amid COVID-19 surge - New York Post

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

CBS Studios is reportedly postponing the production of several of its popular shows in Los Angeles because of a coronavirus surge in the city

Five of the studios’ programs — including two from the hit “NCIS” series — will be affected by the pause, which pushes back the return of post-holiday production from Jan. 4 to Jan. 11, USA Today reported.

In addition to “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles,” the shows include: “Seal Team,” “Why Women Kill,” and “Diary of a Future President.”

The programs air on CBS, streaming devices and other networks,

It’s unclear if other Hollywood studios plan to also delay production.

But, SAG-AFTRA — the labor union representing film and TV actors — posted a message to its website indicating more pauses are likely.

“Most entertainment productions will remain on hiatus until the second or third week of January if not later,” the group wrote in a Tuesday notice.

“This means that the number of our member performers working on sets right now is reduced. Our safety protocols ensure appropriate precautions for the holiday hiatus period including additional time for testing prior to the resumption of production,” the message continued.

Data from Los Angeles County health department showed on Wednesday 7,415 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 — a reported increase of over 1,000 percent from two months ago.

There were also 10,393 cases of the virus Wednesday, along with 274 deaths linked to the illness.

Game Recap: Football | | Ball State Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz. -- In a memorable football season that almost didn't happen, Ball State finished it by making history. The Cardinals scored 27 first-quarter points and cruised the rest of the afternoon to capture the first bowl victory in school history, a 34-13 win over AP No. 19 San Jose State in the Arizona Bowl.

The bowl win caps a seven-game winning streak for the Cardinals that featured a conference title and put this team among the greatest in school history. In the strangest of years, Ball State was at its best. And the Cardinals brought their best effort on the biggest stage of the season, a nationally-televised bowl appearance against an undefeated, ranked team.

"I'm so proud of our football team and the effort that's been put in week in and week out," head coach Mike Neu said. "It's high-character men doing things the right way. We got here because of hard work. We embraced the underdog role, and we came out with a purpose. We wanted to seize the moment, and we've done that. Playing on this stage, on CBS, we wanted to put our best brand of football on the field, and our guys earned it."

The Cardinals (7-1) jumped on the Mountain West champ SJSU (7-1) early, scoring twice in the first five minutes of the game and four touchdowns in the opening 14 minutes. Cornerback Antonio Phillips started the scoring in the game's first possession, taking an interception 53 yards for a touchdown. The lead grew to 13-0 after the Cardinals capitalized on a short punt. BSU took over at the 50 and scored again quickly, with Will Jones punching it into the end zone on a 3-yard run. Tye Evans later added a 3-yard TD run of his own to make it a 20-0 game. On another short field after a Nic Jones blocked punt, Drew Plitt scored on a quarterback sneak to give the Cards a 27-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Cardinals defensive unit turned in its greatest effort, picking off four passes and nearly a fifth on a play that was overturned. San Jose State managed just 69 yards on the ground and was 1-for-11 on third downs, as Ball State protected its early lead with swarming defense.

"The defense was unbelievable from start to finish," Neu said.

Yo'Heinz Tyler caught four passes for 113 yards and scored BSU's fifth and final touchdown, a 48-yard catch from Plitt. Jones led the Cards with 89 yards rushing on 22 carries, as the Cardinals pounded the ball for 189 yards on the ground before kneeling in victory formation. Plitt finished with an efficient 12-for-19 day for 217 yards and touchdowns passing and rushing.

The Arizona Bowl defensive player of the game was safety Bryce Cosby who had one interception, and nearly another one, plus a team-high nine tackles. Brett Anderson II and Jimmy Daw had the other two picks. Plitt was named offensive player of the game.

"We knew we had the opportunity to do something special here. We bought in as a team," Cosby said. "We could've gotten complacent after the conference championship win, but the coaches did a great job keeping us locked in. We came out and executed. I love these guys, and I'm proud of the way we played."

"All season we kept saying, 'The job's not finished.' Well, the job is now finished," Neu said. "We are so excited to bring a bowl win back to Muncie, Indiana."

Arapahoe County approved for Five-Star program - Englewood Herald

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Arapahoe County received state approval to join the Five-Star Recovery Program on Dec. 30, allowing qualifying restaurants and other businesses to loosen their COVID-19 restrictions, just hours before a surprise announcement from Gov. Jared Polis ratcheting down restrictions.

The county became eligible to participate in the program after showing a prolonged decline in its COVID-19 infection and hospitalization numbers, according to a letter from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.

Approval means the county can now begin issuing waivers to qualifying businesses, allowing them to operate at a less-restrictive level than the county's status on the state's COVID-19 dial.

The county was at level red when word came in about the Five-Star program on Dec. 30, which meant all indoor dining was prohibited. Just hours later, however, Polis announced via a tweet that he was requesting CDPHE to move all counties at level red to level orange, which allows restaurants to operate at 25% indoor capacity and loosens restrictions on gyms, indoor events and other businesses.

In a followup news release, Arapahoe County officials clarified that the Five-Star Program certification remains valid after the rollback. It may permit qualifying businesses to operate at level yellow, allowing restaurants to operate at 50% capacity among other restrictions.

Arapahoe County was one of dozens of Colorado counties moved to level red in November and December amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.

To qualify, businesses must first submit an application to the county, detailing how they plan to adhere to a long list of COVID prevention protocols. Next, businesses must receive an on-site inspection by city or county inspectors to prove their plans are in place.

Enforcement will be on a complaint basis, according to county documents, relying on reports from staff or the public. Though the county's application to CDPHE had requested a three-strikes policy before a business' approval could be revoked, the state's plan allows just two verified violations before revocation.

The Tri-County Health Department, which is responsible for mandating adherence to health code restrictions, will seek to work with businesses to come into compliance rather than lose their certification, said Adam Anderson, the department's health data manager.

“There are a lot of rules, and everyone can't be perfect, but we're doing our best to keep everyone as safe as possible,” Anderson said. “I think this program provides good opportunities to help out and still take necessary precautions.”

Anderson said it's unclear how much of the late-fall surge in cases was attributable to restaurants.

“That's the million dollar question,” he said. “We often can't definitively say this case came from that restaurant. With all the resources in the world we'd do a case control study to parse out where that transmission occurred and begin to establish better statistics.”

Instead, Anderson said, public health experts have largely had to rely on guidance and studies from federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which have found a higher risk of virus exposure in restaurants and similar settings.

“Ultimately we're trying to reduce the amount of exposure that people have with their masks off, and unfortunately it's pretty difficult to eat with a mask on around other people.”

While data collected by the department shows that restaurants were the second-most commonly cited location visited by people infected with COVID-19 in the two weeks before testing positive, behind only small private gatherings, Anderson said that data remains very limited.

One problem is that many people refuse to work with contact tracers, Anderson said, and even those who do often can't remember every place they've been for the past two weeks.

“So what we have is a small snapshot,” he said. “We combine that with research about indoor settings with masks off and studies coming from the state and federal level to try to get a sense of the big picture.”

Nancy Sharpe, the chair of the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners, praised the program, calling it an important step in assisting struggling businesses.

“Our business is supporting our businesses,” Sharpe said of the county commissioners. “We don't want them to fail. It's important to make sure people can stay employed. From a financial standpoint, it's important to the county to help keep our business and office space full.”

Sharpe said the county has gone to great lengths to support businesses in 2020 through grants from the federal CARES Act, and added county staff have not yet fully evaluated what further assistance will become available as part of a new federal relief package passed by Congress in December.

Sharpe said she was optimistic about the Five-Star program because it maintains an emphasis on adhering to COVID prevention protocols.

“The most significant thing we can do is keep people healthy,” she said. “We must continue to wear masks, wash our hands, and be safe with who we're around as the vaccines start to roll out. It will be months before most of us can get vaccinated. This is all part of the process of getting us back to a normal life.”

San Jose State vs. Ball State prediction, pick, odds, line, TV channel, live stream, Arizona Bowl kickoff time - CBS Sports

nick-starkel-san-jose-state.jpg

Two conference championship winners experiencing breakthrough seasons highlight one of the postseason's best bowl games when No. 19 San Jose State clashes with Ball State in the Arizona Bowl on Thursday.

The Spartans are the undefeated (7-0) champions of the Mountain West, claiming their first outright conference championship since winning the Big West in 1990. Fourth-year coach Brent Brennan was named Mountain West Coach of the Year and is a finalist for multiple national Coach of the Year awards after leading the program to its first winning season since 2012. The bowl game presents an opportunity for the program to record the first 8-0 record since San Jose State went 13-0 in 1939.

Meanwhile, Ball State is in its fifth year with Mike Neu as head coach and also on the cusp of historic success after handing Buffalo its first loss of the season in the MAC Championship Game. After claiming the MAC West Division title for the first time since 2008, the win against the Bulls gave Ball State its first win against a ranked opponent since 2012 and first conference championship since 1996. The Arizona Bowl is Ball State's first bowl appearance since the GoDaddy Bowl in 2013, and the Cardinals are seeking the program's first-ever bowl victory (0-9).

This will be the first ever matchup between these two programs that sit over 2,000 miles apart. Which one gets to cap off its amazing season with a win in Tucson? Let's take a closer look at the matchups and storylines to follow before making some expert picks both straight up and against the spread below.

Storylines

San Jose State: The one player with bowl experience on San Jose State's roster is starting quarterback Nick Starkel. The former Texas A&M and Arkansas quarterback brought not only 19 games of combined FBS experience to the table for San Jose State's offense but also a prolific showing with 499 passing yards and four touchdowns in a 55-52 loss to Wake Forest in the 2017 Belk Bowl when he was with the Aggies. Starkel, the conference leader in passing efficiency and a second team All-Mountain West selection, brought that big-game energy to the conference championship game against Boise State with 453 yards and three touchdowns in the win against the Broncos. But while Starkel has been a highlight, San Jose State's great strength in this undefeated run has been its defense, which ranks No. 13 nationally allowing just 17.7 points per game. The defense has been particularly strong in the second half, helping San Jose State outscore opponents 117-55 on the season after halftime and powering comeback wins against San Diego State and Nevada. The Spartans trailed in both games against fellow MW contenders by at least 10 points in the second quarter and eventually won by double-digits.

Ball State: Huge season for Mike Neu here in his fifth year at his alma mater. The Cardinals were just 4-20 in MAC play during his first three years but have been 10-5 in the last two and now boast a conference championship. Neu was a four-year quarterback at Ball State, earning the MAC MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors at the end of his senior season as he led the Cardinals to a MAC championship in 1993. Now he helps guide redshirt senior quarterback Drew Plitt, a former Wing-T quarterback in high school who has showcased impressive production in the passing game with 15 total touchdowns over the last four games. Like San Jose State, the ride to a championship was thrilling with five of Ball State's seven games decided by a touchdown or less (4-1 in those games), and just as their opponent on Thursday, the Cardinals have been powered by a stout defense that has answered the call in key situations.

Ball State's defense is led by the MAC co-Defensive Player of the Year Brandon Martin, who sustained a season-ending injury in the 2019 opener and returned to action in 2020 with a force. Martin ranks No. 3 among all FBS players with 12.1 tackles per game and he, along with All-MAC first team selections Anthony Ekpe at linebacker and Bryce Cosby at safety, star in one the league's best back sevens. Ball State has held four high-scoring offenses to an average of 18.5 points below their average over the past four games, most recently limiting Buffalo (51.8 points per game) to just 28 in the MAC Championship Game.

Arizona Bowl prediction, picks

Latest Odds: San Jose State Spartans -9

I've got a couple of angles on this game, and both come down to the fact that we've got a pair of strong defensive teams and a Ball State side that has been underrated by the power rankings. With so much on the line for both of these teams, from the first undefeated since since before World War II for San Jose State and a first-ever bowl win for Ball State, I'm expecting the defenses to take charge as the offenses try to limit mistakes. That leads to a game that's lower-scoring, so I like the under. But this is also a great opportunity to take Ball State as an underdog by more than a touchdown. Pick: Under 63 | San Jose State 31, Ball State 24

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - LaMelo Ball shines, continues to maximize his minutes - ESPN

Just a few days removed from defeating Kevin Durant's Brooklyn Nets, the frisky Charlotte Hornets downed the Dallas Mavericks last night in a breakout effort from rookie LaMelo Ball. Luka Doncic's struggles from beyond the arc continued Wednesday night, as the Slovenian superstar is now shooting just 9.5% from 3-point range to begin the campaign.

Ball, meanwhile, played a career-high 29 minutes and delivered a rich line against Dallas that included 22 points on just 10 shots, thanks to making four of his five 3-point attempts. With 13 combined rebounds and dimes and some surprisingly deft defense, Ball became the youngest player in Hornets history with at least 20 pts, five rebounds and five assists in a game (19 years, 130 days) and the first Hornets rookie to do that since Kemba Walker in 2012. It was an undeniably impressive performance for Lonzo's little brother, who has moved on from a zero-point NBA debut to average 13.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 3.7 APG, and 2.7 3PG in just 21.7 MPG during the past three games.

The minutes, touches, and shots should all continue to rise for Ball as his rookie season, and game, evolves. There aren't too many leagues in which you can find Ball in free agency, as he's rostered in roughly 80% of ESPN leagues, but it's encouraging for his immediate and long-term fantasy profile that he's been able to compile a rich assortment of statistics as the leader of the Hornets' second unit this past week.

For a more widely available player on the Hornets making some statistical noise, versatile forward Miles Bridges can be found in free agency in more than 40% of ESPN leagues and has tallied two blocks in three straight outings and just pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds for a Charlotte team decidedly light on frontcourt size. In fact, on Wednesday Bridges became just the fourth player in Hornets history with at least 20 pts and 15 rebounds in a game off the bench and the first since Nazr Mohammed in 2008.

Wednesday recap

Highlights

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks: 26 points (10-18 FG), 13 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals, 4 TO

Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics: 42 points (15-21 FG, 7-10 3PT), 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 TO

Lowlights

Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks: 12 points (4-10 FG), 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 TO

Jusuf Nurkic, Portland Trail Blazers: 4 points (2-4 FG), 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 4 TO

Wednesday takeaways

Jaylen Brown was brilliant on Wednesday night, scoring 42 points without playing at all in the fourth quarter in a blowout of Memphis, the most points by a Celtics player in three quarters of a game in the past 25 seasons. It was also the second-most points in Celtics history by a player who logged fewer than 30 minutes, trailing only Larry Bird's 43 against the Cavaliers in March of 1986. Again evoking "Larry Legend," Brown's 140 points in five games this season (28.0 PPG) are the most through five games by a Celtics player since Bird's 147 in 1989-90. Brown is enjoying another leap as an offensive force and is looking like quite the draft steal, considering his ADP of 66.7 in ESPN fantasy basketball drafts in recent weeks.

• Spurs assistant Becky Hammon filled in for an ejected Gregg Popovich on Wednesday night, becoming what is believed to be the first woman to act as head coach during an NBA regular-season game. In the loss to the Lakers, San Antonio's Dejounte Murray netted a career-high 29 points to go with 14 combined rebounds and assists.

• Atlanta's John Collins was the player to watch in yesterday's edition of this column given his lackluster production amid increased frontcourt competition for opportunities this season, and he broke out with an impressive line against the Nets in delivering his 10th career game with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds. Collins had averaged just 14 PPG in his first three games this season. It will be interesting to see if this awesome line is part of a larger trend or merely a nice night in a friendly matchup. Sticking with the Hawks, second-year wing Cam Reddish got to the line 10 times Wednesday night and, with Kris Dunn ailing, could continue to see steady minutes as the rare quality defender among Atlanta's regulars.

• The Nets scored the second-most points in a regulation game in franchise history and the most since scoring 147 way back in April of 1982. Brooklyn's Joe Harris hit the first shot of the game against the Hawks and netted 23 points in the contest. With Spencer Dinwiddie out for the season with a knee injury, Harris' offensive workload could prove bountiful, making him a potentially worthy shooting and scoring specialist in rotisserie formats.

• With Miami missing Jimmy Butler to injury yet again, second-year playmaker Tyler Herro became just the second Heat player in franchise history with 20 points and 15 rebounds in a game before turning 21, joining Michael Beasley.

Injuries of note

• The Cavaliers will be without Kevin Love for up to a month with a calf strain, making Larry Nance Jr. a strong interim addition to fantasy rosters.

• Scoring guard Alec Burks is questionable for the Knicks with a sprained ankle that held him out of the team's latest game. If Burks can't go, Elfrid Payton could see a surge in touches and shots.

Analytics advantage for Thursday

The Pacers will be without scoring forward T.J. Warren tonight against the Cavaliers due to a sore left foot. When Warren is off the floor this season, Domantas Sabonis sees a somewhat massive usage differential of 6.5%, making him an ideal building block in DFS play.

Teammate Myles Turner sees a comparable usage spike of 6.4% with Warren off the court this season, while his fantasy points per minute also surge in such scenarios. Stacking the Pacers' frontcourt in an inviting matchup against a Cavaliers team without much rim protection past Andre Drummond could prove rewarding for those playing in daily fantasy competition this evening.

Top players to watch on Thursday

Deandre Ayton's sluggish scoring pace of just 11.5 PPG is a bit surprising given the arrival of legendary creator Chris Paul on the roster. Like with Collins, Ayton could be in a unique buy-low window early on if fantasy managers get antsy about his relatively slow start to the season. A big challenge awaits Ayton on Thursday, as he faces Rudy Gobert's elite interior defense in Salt Lake City.

Five questions that need to be answered with Zdeno Chara out of the picture - 98.5 The Sports Hub

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com
Eric Bolte/USA TODAY Sports

By Ty Anderson, 985TheSportsHub.com

The Zdeno Chara Era is over.

You know what the world looked like the last time we talked like this? Superman Returns was the No. 1 movie in country.

They've since made like five more Superman and they've all sucked just as much ass as that one with the exception of one that was kinda cool. In addition to Superman, Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" was the No. 1 song in the country. That song still bangs, and Shakira is (probably) a fan of the blog, so I'm not gonna make fun of that one.

How this works out for the 43-year-old Chara, Don Sweeney, and the 2021 Bruins remains to be seen.

But it's a sneaky-huge move that will certainly come with its own set of questions.

Some of which will need answering before the Bruins drop the puck on this 56-game marathon in just over two weeks...

What was the Bruins' final offer if they made one?

Not gonna lie, $795,000 and some bonus money was more than doable (or beatable) for the Bruins.

The Bruins had a comparable offer on the table. Perhaps a better one in terms of actual dollars, too. But what was the request that accelerated his exit from Boston? Were the Bruins adamant that he was a third-pairing defenseman and penalty-kill specialist and not a rotating top-four defender? Did they want Chara to sit out the second leg of back-to-backs? If so, how did Chara, an obviously prideful guy, handle that and did it change the tenor of what felt like an easy negotiation given his desires?

There's a communication breakdown and disagreement somewhere in there. I mean, you simply don't pass on more guaranteed money and leave your home of 14 years to sign for under $800,000 with a divisional rival unless there's legitimate philosophical and irreconcilable differences regarding your role.

Also: Did Chara circle back to the Bruins when the Capitals called? Or did the Bruins inform him that they were moving on and that's when Chara decided to pursue his other options? Chara's Instagram post seems to indicate that it was the Bruins who made the call, but the order of events here seems pretty important.

If Chara gave the Bruins a chance to match Washington's offer and the Bruins still passed, then that's all sorts of indefensible from a pure value standpoint alone.

Dec 16, 2017; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara (33) talks with defenseman Brandon Carlo (25) prior to a face off during the second period against the New York Rangers at TD Garden. (Bob DeChiara/USA TODAY Sports)

How does the penalty kill handle his loss?

I really hate the idea that the Bruins are simply replacing a slower, past expiration body. Is Chara what he once was? Well considering he was the best shutdown man in hockey in his prime, nope, he is not. But he was still an extremely serviceable defenseman for this team, and the Bruins' actual task is finding somebody capable of taking on his 21 minutes per night, which just so happen to be the hardest 21 minutes of their game. For all the talk of Chara's demise, it's worth noting that he began almost 70 percent of his shifts in the defensive zone, and was the most-deployed killer on a penalty kill that ranked as the third-best in all of hockey last season. So, again, these are immensely difficult minutes you're replacing.

This will be especially noticeable on the kill.

With Chara gone, Jeremy Lauzon is now the B's top penalty-killing option on the left side.

Lauzon emerged as a solid fit there upon his midseason recalled, and averaged 1:50 of shorthanded time on ice per night from Jan. 21 through the conclusion of the regular season. Lauzon was on the ice for 1.92 power-play goals against per 60 over that sample, which was the third-best mark on the team, trailing only Patrice Bergeron (1.67) and McAvoy (1.24). Chara averaged 3:11 of shorthanded time on per night, mind you, so it's going to take more than just upping Lauzon's deployment here.

The 5-foot-9 Grzelcyk, smart and crafty with his body and stick despite his size, played over 70 minutes of penalty-kill work last season, and is an option. But if he's quarterbacking the top power-play and playing top-pair minutes, adding shorthanded work to his plate may lead to overexposure. (Grzelcyk's played over 24 minutes in just four of his 195 games since 2018.)

John Moore is an option, but last year's efforts in such positions was a little rough.

Out there for over 45 shorthanded minutes, Moore on the ice for 63.96 shots against per 60 minutes of shorthanded action. That was the 13th-worst rate in hockey (though skewed by the sample size), and every player worse than half skated on penalty-killing units that ranked in the bottom half of the league. Include his final season in New Jersey and first two seasons in Boston, and Moore ranks 66th in on-ice shots against per 60, but was 14th in goals against and 40th in expected goals against per 60 among a group of 108 defensemen with at least 300 shorthanded minutes to their name.

We truthfully haven't seen enough of Jakub Zboril and Urho Vaakanainen at this level to know if they're ready for primetime penalty-killing time. P-Bruins coach Jay Leach leaned on Zboril down the stretch and thought he was becoming a "real force down low" before the AHL's pause and subsequent cancelation. Zboril has the frame to be a penalty-killing asset and Vaakanainen was drafted with the hope of being a shutdown guy. But, we're also working with a combined of 125 minutes of viewings (almost 103 from Vaak alone), so it's a big bowl of "I don't know" with these guys right now.

The Boston kill has already lost a bit of its bite for 2021, too, with fearless puck-eater Joakim Nordstrom off to Calgary and Brad Marchand expected to miss the first few weeks of the new season.

This is honestly going to be the biggest test of the B's season and post-Chara life, if you ask me. Just consider this: The Bruins went a combined 65-for-70 (92.9 percent) on the penalty kill against their new divisional foes last season. And with almost all of these teams making personnel or coaching changes to bolster their power play's pop — the Sabres adding Taylor Hall and Eric Staal, the Caps bringing in Peter Laviolette, the Penguins reuniting with ex-assistant coach and power-play guru Todd Reirden — keeping this penalty kill upright and productive without its 6-foot-9 is going to be a daunting task.

Who grabs hold of a leadership role on backend?

With Chara's presence gone, the Bruins will need a new leader to emerge from this blue line. It may be easy to say that this is Charlie McAvoy's blue line now. The major payday awaits him if he continues to trend upwards and and he is now the undeniable No. 1 defenseman for this team. There's no 1-A and 1-B anymore. It's McAvoy and everyone else. That said, don't sleep on Brandon Carlo. He handles himself real well and has really come into his own as a voice in recent seasons.

There's also Grzelcyk, who served as a captain in college for the Boston University Terriers, and is one of the group's more tenured defensemen in terms of organizational experience and on-ice know-how with the B's offseason departures.

"I got the opportunity to be captain in college for two years and that was an opportunity that I didn’t take too lightly," Grzelcyk said earlier this offseason. "I think it’s part of my personality, I’m not the most vocal guy, I’m pretty quiet [and] try to lead more by example. I think that jut comes with experience and we have probably some of the best leadership in the NHL already on the team and so many years of experience that I don’t have to be the most vocal guy and want to talk up too much. I think that does come with confidence and experience through playing a number of years. If there is anything I can add to someone or a younger player who sort of needs advice. I’ve tried to take on that role more and more each year."

Do Bruins have any insurance options on horizon?

The Bruins may have 10 bodies on their blue line entering training camp, but more may be necessary.

So, uh, who's left?

The Bruins have been linked to free agent Ben Hutton. The 6-foot-3 Hutton is no franchise-changer, and may be nothing more than a No. 5 on a good team, but he had a strong 2019-20 as a complementary piece on a particularly woeful Kings team. Veterans Andy Greene (155 blocks in 63 games last year) and Sami Vatanen (23 points in 47 games last season) also remain without contracts.

On the trade market, the Bruins have been linked to Massachusetts native Noah Hanifin since the night he was drafted into the NHL. His stock has certainly dipped, especially after his 2019-20 season with the Flames, but is that something the B's try to revisit? The Coyotes' Oliver Ekman-Larsson is still toiling away in the desert and the Coyotes are broke. It feels like it's only a matter of time before the Coyotes have to bite the bullet and see if he'll go back on his "deadline." (The Coyotes should consider negotiating from a realm that more closely represents reality if they engage on round two of trade talks with the Bruins or anybody else for that matter. You're not getting top picks and prospects and getting the team to take on 100 percent of the contract. Gotta pick one or the other when you're actual months behind on arena payments, my dudes.)

This may be a bad year for the Bruins to trade for a long-term answer on defense, however, as they'd have to protect said player in the upcoming Seattle expansion draft, which could expose someone like Grzelcyk or Carlo if the Bruins don't work out a deal to prevent such an occurrence like the Blue Jackets did with Vegas in 2017. And I gotta admit, losing one of them after walking away from Chara (and Torey Krug) would feel real damn wasteful.

Is Kevan Miller actually healthy?

One of the ickier things to come out of Chara's departure has been the demonization of Kevan Miller still being a Bruin.

Look, I get it. The Bruins made him a priority on the first day of free agency despite lingering knee issues keeping him on the shelf for the entire 2019-20 season. In fact, we haven't seen Miller in a B's uniform since Apr. 4, 2019. He insists that he'll be ready for the start of the 2021 season, but we heard he was close two knee operations ago. It's "believe it when we see it" territory. And at 33, he's an odd piece to retain if the Bruins are moving on from Chara in the name of a youth movement. But Miller's desire to continue his career in Boston, and accepting a contract from the Bruins (the only team who reached out to him when free agency began) is not something we should hold against him. Hell, we'd all do the same thing.

Why they did that is a bit of a mystery, I admit. But the real question is whether or not Miller is indeed fully healthy and ready to go this season, because with Chara gone, this team is going to need what he brought when upright.

The Bruins have lucked out to a certain degree — the heavy Bolts and increasingly heavier Canadiens and Panthers — are out of their division for 2021. But the Capitals love to bang bodies (Chara certainly helps that), and there's obvious nastiness at the bottom of the roster in Philly, Long Island, Manhattan, and New Jersey. And with eight head-to-heads with everyone on deck, the intensity will rise, and so will the tempers. The Bruins will need more than Nick Ritchie and Chris Wagner to handle that.

That's where Miller has been missed the most.
