Homeschool sports bill puts ball in local school boards' court - Prince William Times

The state Senate could consider a bill to allow school boards to decide if homeschooled students in Virginia can join public school sports teams.

March said the bill would not be a statewide mandate but instead allow local school boards to establish a policy that would permit homeschooled students to participate in their programs.

The bill would allow fees to be charged to students to cover participation costs, as well as the costs of additional insurance, uniforms, equipment and facility upkeep and maintenance.

“This could be a way for the public schools to recoup some of the money and make some money to fund their programs,” March said. “I really am hoping if it could pass, one of my local schools in Floyd County could do the pilot program to figure out what works best, and then we can get other schools to tag along.”

Thirty-five other states passed similar legislation, according to the Texas Home School Coalition. Virginia approved a similar measure in 2017, which was vetoed by former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D).

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) supports the bill during a time where the state has seen a spike in homeschool education, March said. However, it is expected to face challenges in a Senate that has a slight Democratic edge, according to March. March said she hopes senators will see an upside for schools to gain extra funding while giving homeschooled students a chance to participate.

There are no recreational sports leagues in March’s district, she said. There are youth athletics leagues listed in Floyd County, though not for high school age students.

“We don't have another way for kids to play sports and homeschool kids don't get any opportunity,” March said. “That's why it was so important to me to try and get this bill passed in my first session and help communities come together.”

Shane Riddle, director of government relations and research for the Virginia Education Association, said that someone playing public school sports should already be established in the public school community and have a familiarity with students on the same team.

“If the student is not in the community, it may be because the parents don't agree with the environment of the local schools or the public school system,” Riddle said. “But then they want the right for their child to play sports there, so that's kind of confusing in regard to the reason they pulled them out in the first place.”

The VEA opposes the bill, but Riddle said that it would be more open to changing its position if the bill were amended. Virginia High School League, the principal administrative organization of high school athletics in the state, currently requires student athletes to be full-time students in regular attendance. VEA wants homeschooled students to participate in half a day of school, Riddle said. Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right, he said.

The VEA would be open to changing its position if the bill were written to accommodate that idea, Riddle said. But Riddle said he doesn’t believe the patrons would want to do it. He also pointed to West Virginia’s homeschool law. West Virginia’s amended law requires homeschooled students to take at least one online public school course.

With members who support and oppose the bill, the Home Educators Association of Virginia remains neutral, according to Yvonne Bunn, the organization's director of support and government affairs.

“There are other sports resources, sports teams and sports leagues that play with mostly private schools, that are available for parents,” Bunn said. “We encourage parents to look into that before doing anything else.”

Homeschooled student athletes who wish to participate in public school sports must be under the age of 19 by Aug. 1 of the current academic year, must not receive compensation for their sport, and must comply with the disciplinary rules and school conduct guidelines applicable to all public high school athletes, including physical exams, according to the bill.

The bill was discussed Thursday, Feb.24,  in the Senate public education subcommittee but the panel has not voted on the measure.

Capital News Service is a program of Virginia Commonwealth University's Robertson School of Media and Culture. Students in the program provide state government coverage for a variety of media outlets in Virginia.

Sixers’ James Harden shoots down ‘ball hog’ reputation - The Philadelphia Inquirer

NEW YORK — Has James Harden gotten a bum rap?

Even though the point guard is averaging a league second-best 10.3 assists, he came to the 76ers with the reputation of being a ball hog.

But that has been far from the case through the first two games he’s played since being acquired with Paul Millsap from the Nets on Feb. 10.

Harden had 29 points, a season-high-tying 16 assists and a season-high five steals in Sunday’s 125-109 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. This comes after he had 27 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds in Friday’s 133-102 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center.

He became the first player in NBA history to have at least 25 points and 12 assists in his first two games with a new team. Harden is also averaging 14 assists while doing a solid job of getting teammates involved.

After he scored the Sixers’ first basket, Harden assisted on the next three on Sunday. His ability to make teammates better goes against what critics warned once the trade was made because of his being a ball-dominant isolation player with Houston. The Rockets traded him to the Nets on Jan. 13, 2021. Despite playing a well-rounded game in Brooklyn, the ball-hog tag stuck with him.

“I don’t care what people say,” Harden said Sunday. “Honestly, I really don’t care at all what people say. I know how skilled and the work I put in to be one of the best basketball players. Nothing was given to me. I wasn’t one of the best basketball players growing up. I had to work every single day to be in the position I am today.

“So there’s nothing that nobody can tell me about my game. I put the work in. I go out there and produce. I try to be the best teammate I can be every single night.”

Harden is right about being one of the NBA’s best players.

His accolades include being the 2018 MVP, a three-time scoring champion, a seven-time All-NBA selection, a 10-time All-Star, and the 2012 Sixth Man of the Year.

The future Hall of Famer is also one of 11 active players named to the NBA 75th Anniversary team.

While those are major accomplishments, the 32-year-old is far from complacent.

“Once it’s all said and done, and I’m not able to play no more, I want to be up there with the best, the best to ever do it,” Harden said. “Top 75 is a great starting point.”

Rivers keeping tabs on Drummond, a longtime family friend

It should come as no surprise that Doc Rivers remained in contact with Andre Drummond even after the Sixers traded Drummond to the Nets on Feb. 10

The two have had a relationship since Drummond was a roommate of Rivers’ adopted Adam Jones at St. Thomas More in Connecticut more than 10 years ago.

To Rivers’ recollection, they’ve spoken two or three times after games since the trade.

“My comments seem like very sarcastic ones,” he said. “He made a behind-the-back, left-handed pass the other night that went out of bounds. And I just texted him, ‘What the [freak].’ He texted back, ‘I had to try it.’

“But he’s playing well, man. I’m happy for him.”

With 2002 title team in attendance, Terps play inspired ball to beat No. 22 Ohio State - The Washington Post

Even two decades later, Maryland’s 2002 national title team is proud of how it closed out Cole Field House with an undefeated season at home.

On the day those champions converged for a 20th anniversary reunion, the present-day Terrapins weren’t about to lose in College Park, either.

The ensuing 75-60 thumping of No. 22 Ohio State on Sunday was an unquestioned highlight of a turbulent and uneven season. Fatts Russell scored 27 points and Eric Ayala had 23 as the Terrapins (14-15, 6-12 Big Ten) never trailed by more than two and led for the final 28 minutes.

Before the game, former coach Gary Williams and players from the 2002 team — including Steve Blake, Lonny Baxter and program scoring leader Juan Dixon, all of whom have jerseys honored in the Xfinity Center rafters — visited with the current Terps.

“You felt their presence,” Russell said. “They came in the locker room, and Coach Williams said a couple words and he gave us motivation. When he talks, everybody listens. Seeing all the guys walk in there, Steve Blake, Juan Dixon, all of them, it was like we went out there just trying not to disappoint them. It was a legendary night.”

Malaki Branham (13 points) led four players in double figures for the Buckeyes (18-8, 11-6), who probably had no idea what sort of hornet’s nest they were entering in a late-season game against a sub-.500 team struggling to avoid the first day of the Big Ten tournament.

They learned soon enough.

Maryland scored the first eight points, and after absorbing a Buckeyes run it took a 32-28 lead into the break.

Ohio State wasn’t entirely out of it for much of the second half, trailing 57-53 with less than seven minutes left. After Xavier Green made a free throw and missed his second attempt, Julian Reese and Donta Scott collected offensive rebounds to extend a possession finished by a Russell three-pointer for the Terps.

Almost two minutes later, a similar sequence unfolded. Scott soared in to collect an offensive rebound, setting up Ayala for a three-pointer to make it 64-53 with 4:17 to go.

Russell and Ayala combined to shoot 8 for 15 from three-point range. It was the fourth time both veteran guards scored at least 20 points.

“Their backcourt was tremendous,” Ohio State Coach Chris Holtmann said. “We had no answer for them.”

Maryland hopes that can continue. It has won three of four as it heads into March, with only Wednesday’s home finale against Minnesota and Sunday’s trip to Michigan State remaining in the regular season.

“At a time like this, we’re dangerous,” Ayala said. “We’re a team that nobody wants to see. People who are in front of us, they’re going to get a fight from us, for sure.”

Here’s what to know from Maryland’s victory:

Reunion time

The 20th anniversary reunion over the weekend included all 11 surviving players, plus Williams and assistants Matt Kovarik and Jimmy Patsos. Dave Dickerson, the other assistant coach, is the head coach at South Carolina Upstate and could not attend because the Spartans are preparing for the Big South tournament.

The gathering comes at an unusual time in Maryland’s basketball history. Former coach Mark Turgeon departed in December, and the school probably will hire his full-time replacement next month.

Williams said he hopes the university and its community will be completely behind the new hire.

“A lot of things have changed, but at the same time, we know how to get it done,” Williams said. “In other words, we won a national championship. That can happen here again. A lot of schools have never won a national championship. We have that going for us.”

Russell 2K

Russell’s three-pointer to cap Maryland’s 8-0 run to open the game also pushed him past the 2,000-point plateau for his career. Russell is the 22nd active Division I player to reach 2,000 points in NCAA competition.

Russell played his first four seasons at Rhode Island and scored 1,594 points for the Rams. With his 27-point outing Sunday, he has 431 points for Maryland as a graduate transfer.

Dziuba’s statement

Sophomore forward Pavlo Dziuba had the Ukrainian flag draped over his shoulders when he came out for the pregame layup lines. The Kyiv native placed the flag on the back of his chair on the bench, and Manning and his staff wore blue sweatbands.

It was Maryland’s first home game since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week.

“It’s just a show of support for Pav,” interim coach Danny Manning said. “I can’t imagine — I don’t know what to say. You turn on the TV and you see all types of projectiles falling through the air. You know he has family members there and friends and people he cares for. I’m pretty sure he’s seen some familiar places or what used to look familiar on TV that doesn’t look the same right now. It’s just for us to let him know we support him and love him.”

NIU Comes Alive In Second Half For 77-72 Win At Ball State - Northern Illinois University Athletics

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team shot 68 percent from the field in the second half to rally past the Ball State Cardinals 77-72 at Worthen Arena Saturday afternoon for the Huskies' third straight win.

"Our offense was great and we got in a good flow in the second half," said head coach Lisa Carlsen following Saturday's victory. "If you look at our last few games, we've had success with the pace within our offense. We did a great job adjusting and getting back to what we needed to do. We needed to get A'Jah [Davis] the ball and it all rolled from there."

Junior forward A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) led all players with 23 points and 13 rebounds, scoring 10 points in the third quarter to key NIU's comeback. It was her 10th straight double-double and 21st of the year. Nia Ahart (Detroit, Mich./Colgate) had 14 points with Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) adding 11 points and three steals. Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and Sidney McCrea (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) each had 10 points.

Trailing 31-26 at the half, NIU (13-13, 10-8 MAC) opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run. Ahart's three at the 7:27 mark capped the run which gave the Huskies their first lead of the day, 35-33. Ball State took back the lead when a Thelma Dis Agustsdottir three-pointer put the Cardinals up 38-37. The Huskies answered back with a Marable jumper and Poisson three to go up 42-38 with 5:09 left in the quarter. Those five points sparked an 18-5 NIU run to close the quarter. Poisson and Davis combined to score 13 of the 18 points as the Huskies took a 55-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

NIU's lead grew to 17 early in the final period as a Marable jumper and McCrea three made the score 60-43 with 8:48 to play. The Huskies took their largest lead of the game with 6:10 remaining when Mikayla Brandon (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) put in a layup with an assist from Davis to give NIU an 18-point lead, 66-48. Ball State used a 9-0 run midway through the quarter to get within nine, as six straight points from Ally Becki made the score 68-59 with 3:54 to go. The Cardinals only got as close as five points the rest of the way as NIU made its free throws down the stretch to come away with the 77-72 win.

"All the people that have stepped into new roles are getting more and more confident on the floor," Carlsen said. "We've seen the maturation of Jayden, A'Jah continues to be A'Jah, and people are coming off the bench and making plays. Sidney was able to do that today with her three three-pointers. A confident team is a dangerous team, especially this time of year. When we're the best version of us, we're a tough team to compete against."

NIU got on the board first with a Marable jumper at the 8:26 mark of the opening quarter, but Ball State responded with an 11-0 run capped by a Marie Kiefer three-pointer at the 5:12 mark. The Cardinals made five threes in the opening quarter with a Thelma Dis Agustsdottir triple putting Ball State up 17-9 with 1:59 left in the first. The Huskies scored the final four points of the quarter to cut Ball State's lead in half, 17-13.

Ball State (16-11, 9-8) grew its lead to seven with 8:56 to go in the second on Agustsdottir's second triple of the day, putting the Cardinals up 22-15. NIU then went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Sidney McCrea three, to tie the game at 22 with 5:27 left in the first half. The Cardinals quickly took the lead back, getting a Kiefer layup and Estel Puiggros three to go up 27-22 at the 4:14 mark. Davis then scored four straight points to get the Huskies within one, 27-26, with 2:07 left until halftime. The Cardinals got baskets from Kiefer and Puiggros to take a 31-26 lead at halftime.

The Huskies shot 50.9 percent from the field in the game, bolstered by a 70.6 percent third quarter. Ball State shot 43.5 percent from the field and made 13 three-pointers. NIU outrebounded the Cardinals 37-28, with Brandon adding 10 rebounds to Davis' 13. Agustsdottir led Ball State with 20 points as Becki had 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

NIU goes on the road Wednesday, March 2 to take on first-place Toledo at 6 p.m. The Huskies wrap up the regular season at the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday, March 5 against Central Michigan at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at NIUHuskies.com/MyHuskies or by calling the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225).

Everton not awarded handball penalty due to lack of evidence ball hit ‘red-zone’ - The Athletic

The video assistant referee (VAR) did not award Everton a penalty against Manchester City in their Premier League match on Sunday because of a lack of conclusive evidence that the ball hit Rodri’s arm in the ‘red zone’, The Athletic understands.

Everton lost the game 1-0 after Phil Foden scored an 81st minute winner for City, profiting from Michael Keane’s mistakes.

Three minutes later, however, Rodri attempted to control a spinning ball in his own box, with the ball appearing to strike the Spanish international’s arm.

Referee Paul Tierney did not award a penalty, but VAR Chris Kavanagh recommended that the game be halted to check the incident.

But Kavanagh decided that there was not enough conclusive evidence that the ball contacted Rodri in the ‘red zone’, the area of the arm beneath the shirt-line which constitutes a handball.

He did not recommend that Tierney check the incident on the monitor, and the game continued.

At full-time, Everton assistant coach Ashley Cole was shown a yellow card after appearing to protest the decision to the refereeing team.

City manager Pep Guardiola said “It was offside,” when asked about the incident. However, The Athletic understands that a potential offside against Richarlison did not affect the decision.

Handball is defined by the FA as when: “the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.

“It is an offence if a player deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm (or when) touching the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger.”

Everton are now 17th in the table, only one point clear of the relegation zone.

Manchester City now lead the league by six points, but have played one more game than second-place Liverpool.

Chicago's Competitive Skee-Ball League Rolls Again After Twisted Hippo Fire Destroyed Rare Machines - Block Club Chicago

LINCOLN PARK — For more than 10 years, Mike Fraser made a living by running competitive Skee-Ball leagues at bars across Chicago.

Fraser partnered last summer with his “dream venue,” Twisted Hippo, the three-year-old brewery at 2925 W. Montrose Ave., to host an expansion league, “The Hippo Ball,” on Thursday nights.

“Skee-Ball is my livelihood and my passion,” Fraser said. “There’s dozens of us.”

This year’s inaugural “Skee-son” is halfway through, with 18 teams, each made of three “Skee-mates,” competing for the “Stan-skee Cup.” Teams include, “Thank You For Skeeing A Friend,” “All Eyez On Skee,” and “The Skee-D-Skee Now Recommends.”

“We love the puns around here,” Fraser said.

On Monday morning, Fraser sent an email to his fellow skee-ballers to inform them of an “emergenskee:” A fire raged in the gangway between Twisted Hippo and a neighboring apartment building. Explosions of alcohol tins rocked the buildings, flames made walls collapse and bricks spilled onto a row of parked cars.

Fraser’s vintage skee-ball machines, known as “Beer Ball,” were trapped inside. He had bought the last two ever manufactured.

By daylight, the extra-alarm fire had finally flamed out. He rushed to the scene with his 35-week pregnant wife and made a beeline past caution tape, firefighters and news reporters to the site of his beloved Skee-Ball machines.

They were nothing but rumble and ash.

“I was in a trance,” Fraser said. “There were no machines. There was no building. It was hard to breathe. And at that moment I realized I probably shouldn’t have been standing there.”

Fraser said Beer Ball machines, if he can track down others, cost about $6,900 each. The Hippo Ball’s top-scorer, James “The Shark” Schwark, set up a GoFundMe to help Fraser replace them. Donations quickly rolled in from Skee-Ballers and Skee-Leagues across the country. The GoFundMe has raised almost $20,000 in three days.

“It’s bananas,” Fraser said. “The love is unprecedented. All the attention is a little uncomfortable and vulnerable. It’s overwhelming how much support there’s been. You just feel so grateful that people care enough to support your dream.”

On Thursday, Fraser, who calls himself the “Skee-E-O,” found a way to keep the good times rolling. He arranged for The Hippo Ball to bounce back and resume play at Glascott’s Saloon, 2158 N. Halsted St, the original location of the “The Skee League” where there are two remaining “Beer Ball” machines.

Fraser said the league had “not lost a single roller.” He dedicated the night to Twisted Hippo. “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler and “I’ll  Be Missing You” by P. Diddy played in the background.

“We pay homage to Twisted Hippo, we mourn and we celebrate the times we had there,” Fraser said. “Everybody is sad and wants a hug. It’s sad. But we’re also celebrating that we’re still here”

The Hippo Ball had its bounce back event on Thursday night at Glasscot’s Saloon in Lincoln Park. Fraser said the league, “didn’t lose a single roller.”

Fraser made his rounds in the packed backroom at Glascott’s and told everyone, “I’m so happy you came.” A gathering of euchre players, who had previously booked the space, moved to the bar upfront.

“There’s no beef,” euchre leader Emily Salerno said. “We’re glad to support them.”

Glascott’s general manager JR Leyva has worked with Fraser for 11 years to stage Skee-Ball leagues on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, drawing up to 180 people each week. After hearing about the fire at Twisted Hippo, Leyva told Fraser that The Hippo Ball could finish its season with away games at Glascott’s.

“We support Mike 100 percent, so I said, ‘anything we can do for you, let us know.’ And he goes, ‘There is this one thing,’” Leyva said. “His passion translates to everyone. They can see it. And they feel it too.”

Fraser said he learned about competitive Skee-Ball from high school friends, got good enough to play in New York City tournaments and started a league in Chicago because he “needed to make some side money” while “working for Yellow Pages, when the Yellow Pages started to not be a thing.”

Fraser demonstrates how to keep square towards the target and establish the firm base neccessary to toss a “hundo.”

The Skee League always sells-out, Fraser said. His goal is to, “bring people together to share in the love of Skee-Ball.”

Anyone can be good at it, Fraser said. Beer Ball machines have unique wooden finishes that are softer off the bounce and bowling-style scoreboards. The first two rounds are played “down the middle,” where players must shoot for the 50s and 40s. The final “Hundo Round” requires hitting 100-point scores in the corner.

“Just let your arm swing and fly,” Fraser said.

Kevin McGhee, known as “The MJ of Skee-Ball,” grabbed the red balls and rolled 8 out of 9 “hundos” in his final turn. The score was high enough to momentarily break the machine.

“We’re glad to still be playing,” McGhee said. “I used to play Skee-Ball when I was little, and then it just stuck with me as I grew up, from Chuck E Cheese’s to Six Flags to Dave and Buster’s, and now I get to play in Mike’s league.”

Kevin McGhee, the “MJ of Skee-Ball,” stands next to his game-breaking score — 8 “hundos” in a 9 roll turn— as Glascott’s owner JR Leyva has no choice but to fix the machine.

Skee-Baller Jared Banaszak moved to Chicago in September and said the league has helped him “meet tons of people.” Fraser gave Banaszak one of his many skee-named prizes: “The Skee-Spirit Award.”

“It goes to the person that brings the most energy to the skee-ball league, and I had to give a speech,” Banaszak said. “I have the trophy on my bookshelf now, Mike put my name on it and everything.”

Sarah Schwark, wife of “The Shark,” brought homemade baked goods like “Rice Krisp-Skees” to Thursday’s comeback to raise funds for the “GoFundSkee.”

“Any word you can add a Skee to, you do it,” Sarah Schwark said. “When you’re at skee-ball, you’re just in skee-ball mode. We’re here for each other.”

Skee-baller Jason Magalin was given a nickname by Fraser, “Kobskee,” and wears a purple arm sleeve to compete.

Fraser insists James “The Shark” Schwark started the fundraiser because “he just really wants to win the league.” But Schwark said this is bigger than Skee-Ball.

“Mike has worked forever building this, so it’s more than just replacing three boards — it’s about building the community back,” Schwark said. “And now he’s got a kid on the way.”

It was just last season that Fraser stood on the bar at Glascott’s and addressed his loyal Skee-Ballers: This might be his last year as their Skee-E-O. The Skee-Ballers had a gift ready for Fraser: A onesie for his expected newborn, reading in front, “Future Skee-E-O.”

“They say I brought all these people together, but these people are the glue that’s holding it together,” Fraser said. “You add the bar, the atmosphere, the competitiveness, and it’s magical.”

Fraser has earmarked the donations for new machines, and said he’s planning on reaching out to the company that used to make Beer Ball. He’ll plead for them to make just a couple more.

“They know who I am,” Fraser said. “I’ll be calling.”

BALL, La. (KALB) - A Ball police officer has been accused of burglarizing businesses in the town.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office said they were asked to assist the Ball Police Department after they identified Randall Wayne Wilmore, 35, of Alexandria, as a suspect in its investigation of the burglaries.

On Feb. 24, RPSO took Wilmore into custody in reference to three counts of theft of a motor vehicle, nine counts of simple burglary, attempted simple burglary, nine counts of malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center, being held on a $276,000 bond.

Rapides Parish Sheriff Mark Wood had this to say following the arrest:

“Anytime a police officer breaks the law, it puts a strain on all law enforcement. I would like to thank Chief Marshal Deen and the Ball Police Department and Ball Mayor Gail Wilking for their continued cooperation and assistance in this investigation.”

Ball Police Chief Marshal Deen had this to add:

“Today is one of the toughest days of my career as your Chief, having to assist in the arrest of one of my own, Randall Wilmore. As your Chief, I would like to thank the citizens of the Town of Ball for your continued support, and I want to assure you this type of behavior will not be tolerated. I would also like to thank Sheriff Mark Wood for the assistance and professionalism extended to our agency through this difficult investigation.”

Ball State DOMA Exhibition Explores Career of Philadelphia Artist Larry Day - Ball State University News

The
David Owsley Museum of Art (DOMA) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, will display the most important exhibition to date of the art of Larry Day (1921–1998) from Feb. 24 through May 21, 2022. DOMA is open to the public with no admission fee from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Organized by the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, Body Language: The Art of Larry Day explores the artist’s significant contributions to American art from the 1950s through the 1990s in a selection of 50 paintings and drawings. The exhibition is curated by Day’s longtime friend David Bindman, emeritus professor of the History of Art at University College London and visiting fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Studies at Harvard University.

The exhibition highlights the most prominent thematic categories in Day’s career: abstraction, figuration, and the cityscape. Together, they work in concert to reinforce the artist’s significance and lasting relevance while revealing Day’s shift from abstraction to representation.

In his hometown, Day was known as “the Dean of Philadelphia Painters,” indicative of his powerful inspiration and impact as an instructor at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and across the city’s many other art schools.

“Day challenged the dominant Abstract Expressionist style of the New York art world and charged into the forefront of artists transitioning to figuration and representational painting,” said Robert G. La France, director of the David Owsley Museum of Art. “I believe that the exhibition will be a revelation for many and appeal equally to students, studio artists, art historians, and the general public. We are grateful to the Woodmere Art Museum for introducing this modern Philadelphia artist’s work to Muncie and East Central Indiana.”

EXHIBITION CATALOG
A full-color catalog for Body Language: The Art of Larry Day is available for purchase from the University of Pennsylvania Press. It includes essays by David Bindman; Sid Sachs, chief curator and director of exhibitions at UArts; Jonathan Bober, curator and head of the Department of Old Master Prints at the National Gallery of Art; and artist Eileen Neff, who studied with and subsequently taught alongside Day. Also included is a “Memory Portrait” written by Day’s widow, Ruth Fine, a retired National Gallery of Art curator.
