Monday Finish: Five things from Farmers Insurance Open - pgatour.com

As always, Torrey Pines South Course provided a brutal test for today’s PGA TOUR stars, not withstanding a day of wild weather that provided rain, hail and shine.

Patrick Reed leveraged a couple of long-range eagle putts on the par-5 sixth hole in the third and fourth rounds and showed some serious resilience down the stretch Sunday to close out a five-shot win.

His ninth TOUR title saw him move to 10th in both the FedExCup and the world rankings.

Here are five storylines you may have missed from the Farmers Insurance Open.

1. Reed’s short game stood up when it counted

Patrick Reed had already made his 45-foot eagle putt to lay waste to many of the serious challengers on the front nine as he chased the Farmers Insurance Open trophy. When he made the turn – realistically – there were three other contenders. One was a shot behind, two others sat three back. But that being said, danger can always lurk at Torrey Pines South Course. Just ask Kyle Stanley who led by as many as seven in the final round of 2012 and by three coming down the 18th only to make a triple bogey and lose a playoff to Brandt Snedeker.

So when Reed missed the green on approach at the 10th, 12th and 14th holes, he could have easily opened the door for others. Instead, he channeled his inner resilience and found ways to get up and down for critical pars. Importantly, those others like Viktor Hovland, Carlos Ortiz and former champion Jon Rahm – couldn’t do the same.

Reed was forced to punch out from trees on the 15th but still got up and down from 50 yards. The subsequent three-shot lead all but sealed the deal. At the end of the day, he ranked 63rd in the field in greens in regulation yet still won. Less than one percent of winners on TOUR over the last 30 years have ranked that low.

The win is great news for Reed given Torrey Pines will host the U.S. Open in June. It might be even tougher over those four days, but he knows he can find ways to get the ball in the hole while under pressure.

2. Xander can play well at home after all.

For San Diego native Xander Schauffele, Torrey Pines had not been a happy hunting ground in the past. Despite growing up in the area and having it as a high school course, Schauffele entered the week having missed four cuts in five starts at the Farmers Insurance Open.

This time things were finally different. Schauffele may not have been a serious threat to the title on Sunday but his 68-69 weekend was good enough to finish as a runner-up to Reed and provide some great confidence ahead of return trips – the next of which will be the U.S. Open in June.

“I'm pretty happy,” he said. “It's nice to get over the hump. It's one of my favorite tournaments of the year and I show up here every year and I miss the cut almost every time. It's nice to have a good finish.

“The fact I put two rounds together I think is the big thing. I still haven't played well on the North Course. Fortunately, the U.S. Open, that's going to be four rounds on the South. Good play and good feels out here is what I'm going to take away from it.”

3. Viktor Hovland has a long future in this game

For a moment on the back nine on Sunday it looked like Hovland could be the one to chase down Reed and create some drama in the finish. Just one shot down at the turn the young Norwegian had a great chance to add a third TOUR win at just 23 but ultimately couldn’t get the critical putts to drop.

After a 4-under front nine, he was riding some great momentum but on the back, while Reed was seemingly making everything of consequence, Hovland bogeyed three of the last five holes. He missed a golden chance for birdie on the 13th from 6 feet and then found trouble on approach on No. 14 and off the tee on No. 15.

“Obviously the front nine was awesome, made four birdies and was just really solid tee to green; made some putts there as well. On the back I didn't really feel like I played bad at all … it was just a couple of mistakes and it's so easy to just let things kind of slip away,” he said.

“It's cool to kind of be up there having a chance to win. Didn't work out this time but feel like I learned a lot and look forward to next week. I feel like my game has been trending in a good way, so I just need to keep working on the things I need to keep working on and hopefully next time I can just get it rolling a little bit more my way.”

4. Top 10-athon

Reed’s win was also his 50th PGA TOUR top-10 finish. He became the first player to make his 50th career top 10 a victory since Jason Day won the 2016 World Golf Championships–Dell Technologies Match Play.

But there were other interesting facts among the top 10.

Tony Finau once again found himself close to a win without actually winning. With his runner-up finish – hot off the heels of a fourth-place finish  a week earlier – Finau has four top 10s this season without winning.

It’s now 36 top 10s without a victory since the start of the 2016-17 season and the most runner-up finishes (seven) without a win during that same window.

Xander Schauffele also has seven runner-up finishes since his last win at the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Will Zalatoris, a special temporary member, now has four top 10s this season after his T7 and 14 top 10s since the start of 2020 in the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR combined.

Henrik Norlander (T2) equaled his career best PGA TOUR finish.

Ryan Palmer (T2) earned his second runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open and first since losing in a playoff in 2018.

Making his fifth appearance at the Farmers Insurance Open, 2017 champion Jon Rahm finished T7, his fourth consecutive top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR (T2 – ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD, T7 – Masters, T7 – Sentry Tournament of Champions and T7 – Farmers Insurance Open). His five results at Torrey Pines, starting with victory in 2017 now read 1-T29-T5-2-T7.

5. APGA alumni making waves.

The week was a big one for some APGA Tour alumni.

Kamaiu Johnson unfortunately had to postpone his dream of a PGA TOUR debut when he tested positive to COVID-19 in the lead up to the Farmers Insurance Open. But it was revealed soon after he’d been afforded a sponsor invite at both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Honda Classic.

Stepping in at Torrey Pines in his place was Willie Mack III – who will also get a start at The Genesis Invitational via the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption. Mack III missed the cut but performed more than admirably.

Kevin Hall, a hearing-impaired golfer who will also play the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, was able to fashion a third-place finish at the APGA event held Saturday on Torrey Pines North. He is now confident in his preparations for a trip to Carmel.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump is the first U.S. president to be impeached twice - and will be the first to face trial after leaving office.

Trump is charged with inciting a violent insurrection, after giving a fiery speech on Jan. 6 urging his supporters to “fight” hours before hundreds of them stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s victory. Five people died during the attack.

Forty-five Senate Republicans voted that a trial would be unconstitutional because Trump is no longer in office and cannot be removed. However, five Republican senators, along with all 50 Democrats, voted for the trial to proceed.

Here are the Republican senators that broke with their party:

BEN SASSE

The Nebraska senator is considered a rising star in the Republican party and a potential contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He publicly denounced here Trump's false claims of widespread electoral fraud and said there was no basis to object to Biden's victory.

LISA MURKOWSKI

Murkowski, a centrist Republican from Alaska, became the first U.S. senator in 50 years to win an election with a write-in campaign in 2010 after losing in the Republican primary. She called for Trump to resign after the Jan. 6 attack.

MITT ROMNEY

Romney, a Utah senator and the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, has been a vocal critic of Trump. In 2020, Romney was the only Republican senator to vote for conviction during Trump’s first impeachment trial.

PAT TOOMEY

The Pennsylvania senator announced in October 2020 he would not be seeking re-election. He said in television interviews Trump committed “impeachable offenses” and called on him to resign after the Jan. 6 attack.

SUSAN COLLINS

The Maine centrist was the only Republican senator re-elected in 2020 in a state also won by Biden. She said Trump had incited the Jan. 6 riot.

VERMILLION, South Dakota (Courtesy Goyotes.com) - NCAA 14th-ranked Creighton outlasted South Dakota in a five-set thriller on Sunday afternoon inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, in a role reversal from Friday's match between the two down in Omaha.

The Bluejays, who won the first two sets of Friday's five-set loss to the Coyotes, this time turned the tables coming back from a 2-0 deficit to hand South Dakota a rare setback inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The Coyotes, suffering just their seventh home loss in five seasons, won the first two sets 25-18, 26-24 before seeing Creighton rally in front of 775 fans to win the match 25-20, 25-23, 15-7.

South Dakota, falling to 1-3, was playing its third five-set match of the young season and its second in three days against a top 25 team.

"We had a five-set match two days ago, it's a battle, and then another one today," said sophomore Elizabeth Juhnke. "We got fatigued, we were more tired than we thought we would be. We didn't get our feet to the ball and didn't get stops. We're going to recover and this will make us better in the long run."

Juhnke paced the Coyote offense with 23 kills while also adding 13 digs defensively for her third double-double of the season.

"I absolutely love playing here and playing at home, I love our fans, there's nothing like playing at home," said Juhnke. "I wish we could have pulled it out in the end.

"I'm grateful that we get to play, grateful that I get to play with my team. I'm just bummed that we couldn't pull it out in the end."

Sami Slaughter tallied 16 kills while Aimee Adams had eight and Maddie Wiedenfeld chipped in seven. Madison Jurgens contributed 48 assists and 10 digs while libero Lolo Weideman had 17 digs.

South Dakota limited Creighton to under .200 hitting percentage in the first three sets before the visitors closed the match hitting .350 in the fourth set and .462 in the fifth set.

"As the match went on the serve and pass game flipped," head coach Leanne Williamson said. "Early on we were getting them out of system a little bit more often which allowed our defense to play at a high level.

"Then, we had a run where we missed five serves and then we kind of backed off with our serving and when we backed off Creighton was in system more often and we're scoring at a much higher percentage which was making it harder on ourselves."

The Coyotes took set one with 14 kills and only one attack error for a .481 hitting percentage. The match hitting percentage of .275 was a season best.

"We were in system as a pretty good rate early on and as the match on we were out of stem more often and it made it a lot harder to score the ball," Williamson said.

South Dakota, who opens Summit League play with a two-match set at North Dakota on Sunday and Monday, hit under .200 in sets two, three and five and dropped set four despite hitting .387.

"We're obviously disappointed of the loss, but this was a huge step in the right direction for this team," Williamson added. "This team really focused on just them of making that change from the first weekend to the second weekend.

"This was really important for our growth going into conference play next weekend."

Both matches in Grand Forks have 1 p.m. first serves.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Silver has become the latest focus of a frenzied online movement by retail traders to push up values of assets that big fund managers had bet against.

The populist trading rally, organised on social media forums such as Reddit’s “wallstreetbets”, has helped attract a flood of retail cash into stocks such as GameStop Corp, burnt hedge funds that had bet against the company and roiled broader markets.

Here are five things to watch on Monday:

** SILVER - Silver prices are at near six-month highs, silver-mining stocks have surged and coin-selling websites are inundated with orders. Australia’s ETF Securities’ Physical Silver fund witnessed record daily inflows by the afternoon. The iShares’ U.S.-listed $16.5 billion Silver Trust ETF, which rose 5.6% last week, could see further inflows.

** STOCKS - GameStop marked a near 400% gain last week, alongside Koss Corp., AMC Entertainment and Express. Still, the heavy short positions, available float and the determination of Reddit investors to not sell could mean further gains for these stocks.

** TRADING VENUES - Online broker Robinhood, one of the hottest venues in the retail-trading frenzy, still has what it says are temporary buying restrictions on some securities, as it tries to raise funding for clearing house-mandated deposit requirements. Interactive Brokers Group Inc said late on Saturday it has lifted all trading restrictions on options in GameStop, AMC and others hit by recent market volatility.

** REGULATORS - U.S. regulators are looking into both Robinhood and the Reddit forums for evidence of market manipulation and the validity of trading bans, although it appears both parties are protected by laws and user agreements.

** BROADER MARKETS - U.S. stocks had their biggest weekly fall last week, while the dollar and Treasury yields rose, although it is difficult to say whether that was just the Gamestop effect or driven by concerns over a loss of economic momentum in the United States, China and Europe as coronavirus lockdowns bite.
