University at Albany lacrosse freshman Graydon Hogg started both of the team's preseason scrimmages because of senior attack Jakob Patterson's offseason knee surgery.
Hogg made the most of the opportunity.
He had six goals against St. John's in an exhibition on Thursday afternoon at Casey Stadium, on the heels of scoring four against Siena last Saturday.
"Unfortunately, Jakob Patterson is out right now, but just filling in for him and doing what I can,'' said Hogg, who is from Oshawa, Ontario. "Just going out there and playing lacrosse and being me."
He worked exceptionally well with junior attack Tehoka Nanticoke, who had seven goals in the unofficial 24-16 victory over the Red Storm that included a fifth quarter. They set up each other several times.
"It's been pretty cool,'' Hogg said. "He's got a lot of experience right now. I'm a new guy, obviously, so just taking as much as I can and obviously with him, he's an unbelievable player, finding me whenever I'm open. It's been pretty awesome."
Head coach Scott Marr said he's "pretty sure" Patterson, who had his meniscus repaired in the fall, will be ready for the season opener against Cornell on Feb. 15 at Casey Stadium. Even when he returns, Marr said Hogg will play a significant role as a freshman this season.
"He's a mature kid,'' Marr said. "He's a (postgrad) kid, so he's a little older. He's played really good competition his whole life in Canada, playing in the box leagues and stuff like that. And he comes from The Hill Academy, which is a great education and great resource for lacrosse with the people they have coaching there."
Though sidelined, Patterson has taken a mentoring role to Hogg.
"He talks to me every day,'' Hogg said. "It's pretty incredible what he's been teaching me this year and the stuff I've been learning with him the last couple of months."
Marr said he also liked what he saw Thursday from sophomore attacks Teioshontathe McComber (five goals) and Corey Yunker, though McComber limped off in the fifth quarter. Marr said McComber was cramping.
Nanticoke slimmed down
Though Nanticoke is listed at 6-foot-1 and 248 pounds, he looks considerably slimmer and quicker in the preseason. Marr estimated that he's lost about 25 pounds since last season.
"Just in better shape,'' Marr said. "He's in the weight room more and designed programs to make him lose weight. Like I said, he's been tremendous so far."
Nanticoke wasn't around to talk after the St. John's scrimmage because he had to run to class during the fifth quarter.
Cornell next up for Great Danes
UAlbany was supposed to have a third scrimmage against Rutgers. But Marr said the Scarlet Knights canceled because they picked up a regular-season game. Rutgers is opening its season against Quinnipiac on Saturday.
"Unfortunately (Rutgers) didn't really tell me in time so I didn't have time to get another scrimmage,'' Marr said. "It's OK. I'd like to have another one, but I think we've got some good film. I think we have a good idea of what we need to do. I think we definitely understand the level of play that Cornell is going to bring. It's nice to have two weeks to work on ourselves and dial some stuff in."
Marr said UAlbany will hold an intrasquad scrimmage next week. He felt the team improved from Siena to Rutgers.
"We definitely moved forward,'' Marr said. "I was super pleased. I think we did a lot of good things. Defensively, we're still struggling in some areas, facing off, our wing play's got to get better — hopefully, things that can improve and should improve with some time and a little more work."
Patience with Patterson, Burgmaster
UAlbany was also without junior midfielder Alex Burgmaster and senior midfielder Ron John for the second straight scrimmage. Burgmaster is coming off surgery for a broken leg suffered last season, while John is out for unspecified reasons.
"As much as we want to get (Patterson and Burgmaster) in there, the nonconference schedule is great and we want to win, but we want those guys back for our conference schedule,'' Marr said. "We need to win the conference tournament, and that's not until May, so we're not going to jeopardize them by bringing them back too soon."
Marr said John is also "close" to returning.
"It's a good problem to have when you have too many guys who can play, but we've got to make sure to mix them all in and keep the chemistry the same,'' Marr said.
