Superdad catches foul ball -- while feeding baby - MLB.com
That's just what happened in Cincinnati on Tuesday night, when a dad with his kid strapped to his chest, bottle in hand, reached up a row with his other hand and came away with a Luis Campusano foul ball, all while taking care of his baby's most basic need.
The dad and everyone around him were understandably thrilled and impressed -- Campusano is the Padres' No. 3 prospect, after all. That is, everyone but the baby, who had no reaction at all, not even a thank you. Maybe the baby already has a few other foul balls at home. Or maybe dinner was just too good to ignore.

Disco Balls Are Making a Comeback. Here’s Why. - The New York Times
In these unsettling times, a twirling party from the ceiling can be an effective pick-me-up.
A hair salon set in a former church is unexpected. Add a chandelier made of at least 20 disco balls? That’s a good time, says Yoshi Burke, the salon’s owner.
Mr. Burke, 32, opened the aptly named Disco Salon in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta in March, and though the space is surrounded by stained glass windows, it’s impossible not to gaze at the massive bulbous sculpture held together with industrial chain and metal zip ties.
“I love it,” Mr. Burke said. “The sun comes up on the side, and it moves and illuminates these two stained glass windows beautifully, and hits this structure and the light just gets everywhere.”
There’s a disco ball revival taking place. After being relegated to kitschy party décor or retro bars, disco balls can now be found adorning weddings, TikTok home decor videos and housewares stores both high (as melted sculptures for Kelly Wearstler) and low (as planters on Etsy).
And where there’s a trend, there’s an emoji: the disco ball version was released by Apple in March.
Libby Rasmussen, a social media and marketing director who lives in Washington D.C., always had an affinity for disco balls. Photos of them perched on a windowsill in her home would catch her followers’ attention on Instagram and she frequently fielded questions about where they, too, could purchase disco balls.
“One day during the pandemic, I was like, maybe I should start selling them,” said Ms. Rasmussen, 31. She contracted with a wholesaler and set up the LivingColorfully Etsy shop where she offers five sizes of disco balls (the largest is “the Grace” at 24 inches).
“The first day I opened the Etsy shop I got 40 orders,” Ms. Rasmussen said. “And then it was 400 orders. And then it was a couple thousand. So it just really catapulted into something crazy. It was really, I think, the right place, right time.”
She sold about 5,000 disco balls within a year, Ms. Rasmussen said, and business is still booming.
The interest doesn’t seem to be slowing down. According to Etsy, searches for “disco ball” increased nearly 400 percent during the past three months, compared to the same time period last year.
Though disco balls are associated with the 1970s, they actually go further back. According to Matthew Yokobosky, senior curator of fashion at the Brooklyn Museum, mirror balls were used in 1920s nightclubs.
“It was an inexpensive way to create a lot of atmosphere,” said Mr. Yokobosky, who curated the exhibit “Studio 54: Night Magic,” which ran in 2020. “You have a disco ball, you shine a light on it, and suddenly the entire room is covered in dots of light that are moving. So you get a lot of bang for your little disco ball.”
In the 1970s, disco balls were used by Black and gay underground clubs that didn’t necessarily have funds for high-tech lighting, said Mr. Yokobosky. The balls allowed them to decorate on a tight budget, and as disco music became more popular, so did the disco ball.
For some, disco balls are inseparable from gay nightlife. “Being in the queer community, disco balls have kind of always been a part of that culture, and a part of nightlife, and tucked inside of our apartments, and hanging from our windows, and sitting in the soil of our house plants,” said Sophie Peoples, 30, an artist from Oakland, Calif. “Oftentimes queer and trans people are kind of the creative pavers of what’s on-trend, and it just sometimes takes everyone else a little bit longer to catch up.”
Mx. Peoples, who uses gender neutral pronouns, is a graphic designer and prop stylist by trade, and started selling fruit-shaped disco balls in their Etsy shop, called GoodDoggie, last year. “What I think is so special about disco balls is they kind of have this aliveness to them that you can’t really recreate in any other way,” they said.
Creating joy at home led Christine Obiamalu, a communications professional by day and musician by night, to purchase two disco balls for her Brooklyn apartment. She works from home and her disco balls usually catch light around 4 p.m., as her work day is ending.
“It definitely gives me a burst of energy to be like, ‘Oh yeah, the sun is out. Things are good. Everything’s fine,’” Ms. Obiamalu, 24, said. “Gives me a little sense of euphoria.”
Fans of disco balls also suspect that a resurgence of 1970s pop culture, fashion and music has led to this moment. “I do think there are other cultural shifts that are going on that also play into the return of 1970s design,” said Kate Reggev, an architect and historian at Zubatkin Owner Representation in New York.
“There’s a decadence and exuberance in shapes and materials — shiny metals like brass and chrome, bright patterns and bold tones like orange and avocado green — that speaks to people’s interest today in moving away from the cozy, homey, comforting spaces we craved during the heat of the pandemic,” Ms. Reggev added.
“I think people are looking for ways to celebrate again,” Mr. Yokobosky said. “They’re looking for moments of joy.”
And sometimes, evoking joy is as simple as shining a light on a sphere covered in mirrored tiles.

NIU (7-31, 6-16 MAC) freshman pitcher Tommy Meyer (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa East) made his second career start and retired the first five Ball State batters he faced, highlighted by shortstop Paddy McKermitt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) robbing Nick Powell of a hit with a diving grab on a line drive to end the first. Ryan Peltier got the Cardinals' first hit with two outs in the top of the second on a single. He later stole second base and scored on a Justin Conant single that put Ball State up 1-0.
Ball State (25-14, 15-4 MAC) loaded the bases on an error and two walks in the fourth. A passed ball allowed Zach Cole to score from third and make the score 2-0. A wild pitch then let Conant come home for a 3-0 Cardinals lead. After a walk to Zach Lane, Amir Wright singled up the middle to bring Matthew Rivera in to make the score 4-0. The Cardinals tacked on four more runs in the fifth to go up 8-1.
NIU got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos Aranda (Santo Domingo, D.R./Ellsworth CC) laced a double to left centerfield with one out. He advanced to third on a wild pitch after a flyout for the second out of the inning. Eric Erato (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) drove in the Huskies' designated hitter with a double to make the score 8-1. The Cardinals broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the eighth to take a 15-1 lead, which went on to be the final score.
"It was a tough weekend for us," said head coach Mike Kunigonis. "We need to be better and put in good practices this week so we are better next weekend."
Erato was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a stolen base. Aranda, Brandon Johnson (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle Twp.) and Aaron Harper (Hemet, Calif./Mt. San Jacinto College) each had a hit as well. Meyer allowed four runs, one of which was earned, in four innings on the mound on four hits and three walks.
The Huskies head to Western Michigan for a four-game series against the Broncos beginning Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. CT.

The ball is back in Newsom's court on single-payer health care in California - San Francisco Chronicle
The ball is back in Gov. Gavin Newsom's court when it comes to creating a single-payer health care system in California.
In January, when Newsom was asked if he supported a bill to create a universal, government-run health care system in California, he dodged the question, saying he was waiting for a report from a state commission studying the issue.
On Monday, the commission finalized that report, which found that health care costs will skyrocket by 30% in nine years under the current system and advocates an overhaul that would eliminate distinctions among private and government coverage, in favor of a new system to provide health care to all Californians.
The Democratic governor has long said he supports creating such a system in California but has not endorsed specific legislation to do so. Now that the report is out, it’s not clear what steps he may take to get there.
“We have been following the progress of the commission’s work, and look forward to reviewing and discussing the final report with the Legislature and stakeholders,” Newsom spokesman Alex Stack wrote in a statement. He pointed to other ways the governor has worked to expand health care access, including by expanding eligibility for the state’s health coverage to more undocumented immigrants.
Newsom’s secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Mark Ghaly, chaired the commission and committed in the report to assign staff to coordinate with President Joe Biden’s administration. That’s a significant step toward overhauling California’s health care system, advocates say, because the state would need approval to repurpose the billions of federal dollars that flow into the current system.
“That's really the key next step, and depends upon the governor's leadership,” said Michael Lighty, a consultant working with the National Union of Healthcare Workers to advocate for a single-payer system. “This is really a new day for health care reform in California.”
The commission’s report stops short of explicitly endorsing a universal, government-run health system in California, as proponents of so-called single-payer health care had hoped, and instead leaves the door open for private health insurers to have some role in a new system. But the report does endorse a major shakeup to a “unified financing” system. The report outlines several options for how that system could look, including a “single-payer” system that would eliminate private insurance.
Carmen Comsti of the National Nurses United union, was the lone commissioner to vote against sending the report to Newsom and the Legislature on Monday, arguing it didn’t go far enough in specifically recommending to the Legislature how to implement single-payer in California.
“This report falls short of presenting clear, concrete, formal actions to get us to single-payer,” she said. “We bury the lead on single-payer and its benefits. The report scarcely uses the phrase single-payer at all.”
Newsom has long said he supports a single-payer system. Since taking office, however, he has not endorsed legislation to transition to single-payer, but has taken other steps toward expanding health care within the existing system.
He said in January that he believes it’s “inevitable” that the United States will transition to a single-payer system eventually, but stopped short of laying out a plan for how he would work toward it. He pointed to the commission’s report as a critical next step.
Any overhaul of the health care system will meet major resistance from many parts of the industry. That was illustrated earlier this year when a coalition of health care organizations and business groups, including the California trade groups representing doctors, hospitals and health insurance plans, came out in fierce opposition to a single-payer bill in the Legislature.
The bill, AB1400, was shelved by its author before coming up for a vote on the Assembly floor.
Ned Wigglesworth, a spokesman for the coalition, said the group is still reviewing the commission’s report and doesn’t want to comment yet. Previously, however, the group blasted the concept of single-payer health care. During the debate over AB1400, the coalition wrote that it would “immeasurably disrupt the health care that millions of Californians rely on every day” by forcing them all onto a government plan.
Anthony Wright, executive director of the consumer advocacy group Health Access, told The Chronicle he thinks the report could have made clearer recommendations on how to implement single-payer. Wright, who supports transitioning to single-payer and voted in favor of the report, said it’s still a significant step.
He said the discussions with the federal government that Ghaly commits to in the report are particularly consequential. In the meantime, he said there are many piecemeal steps the Legislature can take toward expanding health care access to more people and laying the groundwork for a big transition that will take many years.
“It would be a mistake to think there’s just going to be one bill. … This is too big a project,” he said. “There’s some fairly big conceptual pieces that need to pass the Legislature. It can’t all be done piecemeal, but I think it needs to be an iterative process.”
