PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Once a year in Parma Heights little princesses get to actually dress up like, well, little princesses for the annual Snowflake Ball Father/Daughter Dance.
This year’s affair takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Valley Forge High School cafeteria.
“The Snowflake Ball has been going on for more than 15 years,” Valley Forge High School PTSA President Donna Kontra said. “It’s a chance for kindergarten through fifth grade girls to bring their significant male figure -- dad, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, brother -- to a dance.
“There will be a DJ, pizza and snacks, a selfie station and always a little prize for the girls. In the past it’s been a light-up snowflake necklace to remember the dance.”
The Snowflake Ball Father/Daughter Dance is open to girls currently attending Greenbriar Middle School, Pleasant Valley Elementary School, Parma Park Elementary School, Ridgebrook Elementary School and Green Valley Elementary School.
Tickets can be purchased online for $15 with the proceeds going to the PTSA scholarship fund. Kontra said the event, which attracts roughly 200 people, normally sells out.
“It’s something for the girls to look forward to and a chance to bring those dads in and give them some quality time with their daughters,” Kontra said. “Also, it’s a formal dance, so we tell the girls they need to dress up.
“You’ll see some that look like it’s a miniature prom for them. The biggest thing is you get guys who don’t normally dress up or wear a tie, but they’ll do that for their little girls.”
Even though roughly a decade has passed since Kontra’s daughter, Genevieve, attended the Snowflake Ball Father/Daughter Dance, the Valley Forge High School senior said memories of the event remain vivid.
“When I went to my first father-daughter dance it was so special,” Genevieve said. “It made me feel like I was a princess, because I got to spend the whole night with my dad.
“Being able to just have fun, that’s why now being in the PTSA (Parent, Teacher and Student Association) I help every year to make sure I can make the night as special for the little girls now as it was for me.”
