4-star WR Malachi Wideman trending toward Vols in Crystal Ball - 247Sports

Four-star wide receiver Malachi Wideman is set to announce his college decision at 1:00 p.m. ET. On National Signing Day, the Tennessee Volunteers seem to be picking up a lot of steam with the athletic wideout.

Wideman is a native of Venice, Fla., and he is the No. 22 wide receiver in the 2020 signing class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Wideman originally committed to Florida State on May 5 of last year, but he has cooled on the Seminoles since the school fired Willie Taggart near the end of the 2019 football season. Since then, Tennessee has made a push to get him, and it looks like it’s paying off.

A quick look at Wideman’s 247Sports Crystal Ball shows that the Vols have a big edge when it comes to landing his signature on National Signing Day. Not only has Tennessee received three new predictions in the Crystal Ball, but five predictions that were originally in favor of the Seminoles have been flipped to the Volunteers. As a result, Tennessee now has 67 percent of the Crystal Ball predictions for Wideman. Florida State still has 17 percent, and Florida and Ole Miss are tied at eight percent of the predictions.

Adding Wideman would be key for the Volunteers — a team that needs to reload at wide receiver. Tennessee loses both Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway, who were the team’s two leading wide receivers in 2019. Wideman would help head coach Jeremy Pruitt restock that position.

In his 247Sports Scouting Report, Wideman is compared to former Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin and is tagged as having second-day NFL Draft potential. Wideman has top-notch athleticism and can go up and grab jump balls. However, he does need to work on route-running and could add some more weight on his body.

“A blue-chip football and basketball recruit with length and muscular build,” reads Wideman’s 247Sports evaluation. “Known for freakish athleticism that allows for above the rim game on the hardwood and ideal red-zone and deep threat ability as wide receiver on gridiron. Effortless leaper with true ball skills and body control. Long strider with wide catch radius and plus ability after the catch. Can make plays in traffic with good quickness. Plays with good feel and awareness in the red zone. Raw route-runner at this stage. Could easily carry more weight if football becomes primary focus at collegiate level with athleticism to make early impact despite polish. A pro career in either sport seems possible depending on priorities following high school.”

Wideman would be the 13th four-star recruit in Tennessee’s 2020 singing class, which currently ranks No. 14 in the country.
