Couple gets engaged at Ball State's #MuncieOut game - The Star Press

MUNCIE, Ind. — For Jeff Van Zandt and Chrissy Bennett,  Ball State University was just another stop on a small romantic getaway, but it's one they'll remember forever.

All because of a fictional show and a late night talk show host.

During a media timeout at Saturday's Ball State basketball game, Van Zandt was on the court shooting basketballs into a shopping cart for one of the game's sponsored entertainment breaks, his girlfriend Bennett standing behind him filming the whole thing on her phone.

Just after finishing the game, he fished out a small box from his pocket and got down on one knee and asked Bennett to marry him.

She said yes, backed by a roaring crowd at the #MuncieOut game that was packed with locals.

Their love for 'Parks and Recreation' inspired him to propose at the game

Neither Bennett or Van Zandt is a BSU grad or a Muncie local, though, which leaves the question: why propose at a Ball State basketball game?

Van Zandt said that he's been a fan of David Letterman since he was a kid and had heard of Muncie and Ball State because of the late night host. The couple also bonded over watching NBC's "Parks and Recreation" together.

The fictional Indiana-set show has loose ties to Muncie, adding to several reasons the stop was added to a romantic weekend trip for the New Albany couple.

"Our whole relationship we bonded over watching 'Parks and Rec,'" Van Zandt said. "So let's take a little trip to Muncie."

Muncie just made sense. The stop on the trip would be a romantic gesture without arousing too much suspicion from Bennett. It was the perfect place to pop the question.

Bennett was caught completely off guard by the proposal, and was still stunned after the two left the court.

"She's the most wonderful women I have ever met," said a lovestruck Van Zandt.
