GENTRY -- The Gentry High School bowling teams hosted Rogers-Heritage at Hillside Lanes in Gentry on Thursday, and the Gentry girls won the final match of the season by 63 pins.
"We have had a good season so far," said Kelli Deen-Matthews, who coaches both teams. "The girls only had one loss all season and it was to Rogers-Heritage," she said, adding that "the Heritage girls were undefeated until Thursday when the Gentry Pioneer girls beat them in the final match of the season by 63 pins."
According to Deen-Matthews, the Gentry boys started out the season as, probably, the best team Gentry has had.
"We had depth and were rolling the ball really well," she said. "After Christmas, we ... lost two of our varsity boys and have struggled a bit to get back on track.
"I have been proud of the way they have handled it and stuck together as a team. I have two freshmen that have had to step up and join the four seniors and continue the varsity season. The boys are getting their rhythm back and I hope we can post some big scores at conference (the conference tournament) on Feb. 5," she said.
Deen-Matthews said that both Gentry teams are made up mostly of seniors and that she is hoping to do well at the conference tournament and at the state tournament, too.
"At the end of the day, win or lose, I am proud of all of them and will definitely miss all my seniors," she said. "It would be wonderful if the girls can round out their high school years as back-to-back state champs," she added.
The Pioneer bowlers were to be in Little Rock to compete in the 4A-3A West conference match today, Feb. 5. If the teams qualify for the state tournament, they will travel to Cabot on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
