Major League Baseball will expand its support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities with the launch of its three-school “HBCU PLAY BALL Series,” starting Saturday at FAMU at Moore-Kittles Field.
Other stops include Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, Ala. – March 30th) and Claflin University (Orangeburg, S.C. – May 3rd).
FAMU alumni, including former MLB All-Star outfielder Vince Coleman and former MiLB outfielder Antonio Grissom, will appear at the first event of the Series Saturday prior to the Rattlers' 2 p.m. game against Dayton at Moore-Kittles Field.
Saturday is also designated as 'Fan Day' for the baseball team.
MLB’s signature youth engagement activity, designed to showcase the fun and casual activities of the sport, will bridge a connection to the HBCUs and highlight them as viable options for both baseball and academics.
Registration for the “PLAY BALL” event is online and now open. However, participants may also register on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Instruction begins at 10 a.m.
No baseball or softball equipment is necessary, but participants are asked to dress in athletic attire suitable for the weather.
All participants will receive a free “PLAY BALL” T-Shirt, wristband, and bat and ball set to take home.
First pitch between FAMU and Dayton is set for 2 p.m. as the Fan Day activities will begin following the conclusion of the game.

After the baseball game concludes, fans will have the opportunity to meet head coach Jamey Shouppe and members of the 2020 baseball team for autographs and pictures. In addition, the 2020 schedule poster will also be given away at the event.
FAMU begins the three-game weekend series with Dayton on Friday as first pitch set for 4 p.m.
MLB's event will build on MLB’s existing efforts, most notably the Andre Dawson Classic (formerly Urban Invitational) – an annual tournament named after the Baseball Hall of Famer and FAMU alumnus designed to highlight HBCUs and their baseball programs.
Since its inception in 2008, dozens of HBCU athletes who have played in the tournament have been selected in the MLB Draft.
