They refused to let the threat of inconvenient weather rain on their parade.
On Saturday morning, Feb. 22, more than 500 kids who play for West Garden Grove Youth Baseball proudly marched through the streets of their city.
“It’s so fun to see the smiles and excitement on the kids’ faces,” Erin Fales, a volunteer with the group, said prior to the season-opening celebration.
Baseball and softball players, ages 4 to 14, congregated at Edgar Park and made their way to Bell Intermediate School. In keeping with the parade’s theme, “Local Heroes,” the grand marshals were all rescue workers who themselves played in the league as youngsters: Irvine Police Officer Eric Stevens, Garden Grove Police Officer Paul Tessier and Newport Beach Fire Captain Matt Reis.
The guests of honor led the parade from a SWAT tank and a fire truck. Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones and six city council members also joined the route.
“It’s always a big to-do,” Fales said. “The parade brings the community together and, we hope, motivates people to come to our games and cheer on our players.”
