BELMAR, NJ — T-ball for children age 3½ to 5 will be offered this spring by Belmar’s Recreation Department, while a three-week baseball/softball clinic will be held for third- through sixth-graders.
A simplified version of both baseball and softball, T-ball is designed to help children develop their ball-game skills in an instructive, yet fun environment. It’s usually recommended for youngsters before starting Little League play.
The season will kick off during the week of April 20, with games beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Behrman Park, located off 18th Avenue (near the railroad tracks) in Lake Como.
Teams will play once a week with the season expected to end in early June. The number of teams will depend on the number of children who sign up, said recreation director Barry Trogu.
In addition, parents who volunteer as coaches are crucial to the program’s success, he added.
The cost is $50 per child. The registration deadline in Sunday, March 15 and can be made for players and coaches by clicking here.
Beginning next month, the Recreation Department will hold a three-week baseball/softball clinic for Belmar and Lake Como boys and girls in grades 4 through 6.
The clinic will be offered on Thursday, March 12, 19 and 26 — from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. for first- through third-graders and from 4 to 4:30 p.m. for fourth- through sixth-graders.
Youngsters at all skill levels are encouraged to participate in the clinic, where they will learn how to catch and throw a baseball or softball, and how to field a groundball. All sessions will be held in the recreation gym.
Cost is $10 per student, who must bring his or her own glove — and a serious desire to learn these skills.
Space is limited to the first 20 youngsters in each clinic level. The registration deadline is Thursday, February 28. To sign up, click here.
For more information on either program, contact recreation director Barry Trogu at 732-681-3700. Ext. 211 or btrogu@belmar.com.
