Test your winter swing at U.P. ice golf, glow ball challenge - MLive.com

ST. IGNACE, MICH. -- Michigan golfers usually have to head to a southern state if they want to hit the links in late winter.

But for those with hardy souls who truly want to test their swing, there’s the annual U.P Ice Golf Scramble and Glow Ball Challenge, whose main event involves a golf course laid out on a frozen bay in St. Ignace.

This year’s scamble, the 34th annual, is scheduled for Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7. Participants must register by February 29.

“Everyone’s tired of winter by then, so this is kind of their ‘cabin-fever, get-out-and-golf’ outing,” said Bridgett Sorenson, events manager at St. Ignace Visitors Bureau.

Depending on ice cover at the Straits, this year’s golf scramble will be on a nine- or 18-hole course on St. Ignace’s Moran Bay. Teams are encouraged to caddy their clubs (and BYOB coolers, if they choose) in sleds, and to use brightly colored golf balls, for obvious reasons.

The “Glow Ball Challenge," held at dusk, involves hitting a glowing ball as close as possible to a pin for a chance to win a weekend getaway in St. Ignace.

The entry fee for the weekend is $40/person for each two-person team, and it includes lunch and dinner, gifts, free shuttle service, and other goodies. More information on the event is online.

While there are always a few serious golfers who attend, Sorenson said the weekend is mostly meant just to be a good time.

“You can be the best golfer, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to do very well because of the ice,” she said. “There’s so many people who just do it to have fun.”
