CHICOPEE — Golf Channel viewers are familiar with Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls — or, they’re at least familiar with the 30 or more PGA pros like Phil Mickelson who play their rounds with the ball.
Now those viewers have a chance get familiar with Callaway Golf Ball Operations Inc. and its Chicopee plant where longtime employees make the Chrome Soft ball and other products in the Supersoft line.
The Golf Channel will air the 30-minute documentary “The Ball That Changed A Town” Channel at Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The show features interviews with employees, including Vincent J. Simonds, Callaway’s senior director of global golf ball operations.
Chris Harrison, host of the dating show The Bachelor since 2002, did the program’s voiceover work.
The Callaway plant, previously part of Spalding and manufacturer of its Top-Flite brand of golf equipment, has made golf balls longer than anyplace else in the world and was the place were dimples were first added by machine. Spalding came to Chicopee in 1905.
The documentary focuses on the more than $40 million in expansion and technical upgrades California-based Callaway has made to the Chicopee plant in recent years. The upgrades, which includes robots moving trays of golf balls in the making in and out of presses, help keep the plant competitive in a global marketplace.
