Coronavirus John Ball Zoo pushes back opening day indefinitely Todd Chance 2:21 PM, Mar 21 - Fox17

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — John Ball Zoo has indefinitely delayed its 2020 opening day, which was scheduled for April 3, amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

The nonprofit said today it has decided to "remain closed until further notice and in alignment with government guidelines."

John Ball Zoo houses over 2,000 animals.

Although reports state the risk is very low that the virus can spread to animals, the zoo's team is taking additional precautions to extend social distancing to the staff's interactions with the animals, in particular the primates.

The zoo has taken a number of precautions, including closing all indoor facilities, adding hand washing and sanitizing stations and enhancing cleaning protocols, said Peter D'Arienzo, CEO, John Ball Zoo.

While the pandemic has much of the public staying close to home, John Ball Zoo is launching a series of videos and photographs of the animals that live at the zoo across their social media channels.

You can follow them on Facebook here. For more information, and to support the zoo, you can visit jbzoo.org.
