Update: DeKalb police presence on Ball Avenue due to man barricaded in home - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

DeKALB - DeKalb police have blocked off Ball Avenue in response to an ongoing situation involving a man who's barricaded himself inside a home in the 500 block of Ball Avenue.

DeKalb interim Police Chief John Petragallo said the situation is still ongoing almost two hours in Monday night, but police believe it could involve a mental health crisis, and are responding accordingly.

Petragallo declined to say whether the man had threatened himself or others.

DeKalb Police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas confirmed to a Daily Chronicle reporter around 9:30 p.m. Monday that police do not believe there are any other people inside the home, but did not reveal any further details.

The police department issued an alert shortly after 8 p.m. Monday warning residents to avoid the area and shelter in place until further notice due to increased police activity.

Heavy police presence at the corner of Ball Avenue and Fourth Street blocked the area from vehicle and foot traffic Monday, across the street from the DeKalb Park District's Sports and Recreation Center and Huntley Middle School.

As of 9:30 p.m., police had not entered the one-story home where the man is barricaded, and have not made any arrests.

DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies also responded to the scene.

This is a developing story which will be updated as more information becomes available.
