Game summary: It has been a very off-and-on season for Giolito, the ace of the White Sox pitching rotation. Saturday’s performance vs. the Rangers was very much off.
Texas jumped on Giolito early. In the first, Shin-Soo Choo hit a 446-foot shot to right on a hanging offspeed pitch from the White Sox righty. The three-run blast was Choo’s third of the season.
Meanwhile, after a big offensive outburst in the opener vs the Rangers, the White Sox lineup has returned to their quiet conduct of the previous week. Abreu was an exception; with an bloop RBI single in the third, he extended his hitting streak to 16 games. The White Sox trailed 4-1 after three innings.
Giolito ran into more trouble in the fourth, when Rougned Odor hit a two-out double to right field and Elvis Andrus knocked him in. In the fifth, Willie Calhoun homered for the second straight game, this one a solo blast to left. Giolito was removed from the affair, trailing 6-2.
The White Sox final run of the day came off the bat of Nick Madrigal. A hitter not known for his power, Madrigal flexed his strength in the 6th, hitting a solo home run over the left field wall. It was his second homer in as many games.
However, the South Siders dropped this one 7-3, and are now 3-9 in their last 12 games.
