Five people were injured on Tuesday night at San Francisco’s Washington Square Park when a tree branch fell and struck them, officials said.
Officials responded at about 5:39 p.m. to the park near Filbert Street and Columbus Avenue in North Beach where they found a fallen tree branch, according to San Francisco police.
Medics from the San Francisco Fire Department treated five people with injuries, police said. A boy was taken to the hospital “as a precaution.” The other four people were treated and released at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
Members of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks and City Attorney’s office responded to the scene.
A video tweeted by fire officials shows a massive tree in the corner of the park that has a splintered trunk where a large branch broke off and fell to the ground.
Yellow tape surrounds the fallen branch while picnickers, park-goers and passersby stand in clusters around firefighters, the video shows.
In 2016, a San Francisco woman was paralyzed when a falling tree limb struck her at Washington Square Park.
A San Francisco woman who was paralyzed when she was hit by a falling tree limb in Washington Square Park filed a lawsuit against the city for negligence on Monday. The woman, Emma Zhou, sued the city, claiming workers negligently pruned the Canary Island pine tree. In 2018, the Board of Supervisors approved a $14.5 million settlement in the case.
