Oakland police on Friday released the names of five officers who, along with a Richmond cop, shot an attempted murder suspect, who died after a chaotic chase last month.
The Oakland Police Department released only the first initial of each officer’s first name. But state employment records show they are: 14-year veteran Officer Michael Finnicum; 12-year vet Officer Benjamin Sarno; 5-year vet Officer Kyle Gaskin; 5-year vet Officer Robert Recendez; and 3-year vet Matthew Hohn.
Richmond police earlier identified their officer as Joe DeOrian. The officers on April 16 fired at Juan Ayon-Barraza, 24, after Ayon-Barraza allegedly raised a gun at police. He was struck multiple times and killed.
Authorities said Ayon-Barraza assaulted and gravely injured a woman, leaving her for dead in the East Bay hills. He then led police on a chase through Oakland to Richmond, where he ran over two Oakland officers, causing one to suffer multiple broken bones.
The woman he assaulted is a Vallejo resident who remains in critical conditional. Police have not disclosed a possible motive, but say the woman told family members she was meeting Ayon-Barraza for breakfast that morning.
At the time of his death, Ayon-Barraza had an arrest warrant out of Contra Costa County for failing to take classes for a domestic violence conviction, stemming from an incident in Richmond where he allegedly held a knife to a woman’s neck and sexually assaulted her.
