MUNCIE, Ind. - Bill Richards, who completed his 48th year as the head men's tennis coach at Ball State University, remains the only coach in school history to receive the President's Medal of Distinction which was presented to him at the 2012 Ball State spring commencement eight years ago today.
This season Richards etched his name further into the Ball State men's tennis record book by earning his 700th career victory Feb. 1 at home against Wright State.
Richards began his head coaching career with the Cardinals in 1973. The winningest men's tennis coach in Ball State and Mid-American Conference history, Richards has amassed a 705-434 (.618) overall record and a 217-64 (.772) conference ledger for his career. Richards has coached 17 teams to undefeated regular seasons and 38 MAC regular and or/ tournament championships, with the first conference title coming in 1984. Richards has also garnered MAC Coach of the Year accolades 15 times and has made eight NCAA tournament appearances.
For his outstanding achievements on and off the court, Richards was inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the Benny Award, the highest honor for services from the Ball State Alumni Association, in 2006.
Ball State's spring commencement was originally scheduled for today. Even though the University won't be holding its annual ceremony due to COVID-19, the Ball State men's tennis team would like to congratulate all of today's 2020 graduates.
