Lavar Ball is erratic yet committed. Loud but entertaining. Flamboyant with passion. Extra but determined. Delusional… and completely captivating.
Sometimes Lavar Ball is so off base he’s on point. Sometimes he makes his life harder and deserves the criticism. But he just doesn’t care. He’s going to say what’s he’s going to say. Well, so will we.
LaVar has spent the better part of a few years trying to convince Americans and Lithuanians that he can predict the future. To some extent, that might be true.
We all remember what happened when LaVar said Lonzo Ball would be drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017.
Then, in December that year, the Lakers faced the Cavaliers, and Lonzo faced his idol, LeBron James. A few days later, LaVar made it clear that Lonzo faced his future teammate. Then the summer of 2018 happened. Decision 2.0 happened. Four years, $153 million dollars happened.
Maybe LaVar isn’t gassing this up. Maybe his words aren’t meaningless. Maybe truly believing in something can make something happen in the social media era.
So, can LaVar really predict what will happen in the future? No, not at all. Because LaVar has been wrong many, many times.
Nobody likes making promises they can’t keep, but LaVar will make them for you. Remember when we were guaranteed UCLA would win the NCAA championship? De’Aaron Fox set out to shut LaVar’s mouth and the fifth overall pick delivered with 39 points to end UCLA in the Sweet 16.
The things LaVar says come out prematurely fast, and they tend to annoyingly last.
After UCLA’s loss, LaVar immediately went double or nothing, guaranteeing Lonzo would win Rookie of the Year and lead the Lakers to the playoffs.
Being wrong isn’t really important to LaVar. If he was right about a couple of lottery balls sending Lonzo to LA, he was going to be confident about his son sending LA to the playoffs.
Lonzo Ball’s career was bumpy from the beginning. Bodied by Patrick Beverly on opening night, Zo responded with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists in a win against Phoenix the following night.
This was another thing Lonzo learned from his dad: being consistently inconsistent. Since his rookie year, Lonzo has been consistent with injuries, shooting droughts and passive play. Unable to live up to his dad’s publically-announced expectations, Lonzo’s perception went from a 6’6″ high IQ hustler to a bust who looks afraid. The hate that Zo had coming killed any momentum he built. The Lakers missed the playoffs and Ball missed the final ballot for Rookie of the Year by a couple of spots.
If you asked Lonzo, he probably doesn’t care much. If you asked LaVar Ball, he would definitely say it all again if he could. He’s built a brand and he’s deep into a personality people can’t look away from.
Lavar went on to promise the Lakers will win championships once they’ve collected all 3 Ball brothers. He made it clear: “All three of my boys are going to be one-and-done.”
Then LiAngelo went undrafted and the Lakers dangled Lonzo over the Pelicans in a tampered trade package for Anthony Davis, and that’s when we learned Lavar didn’t want Lonzo in New Orleans because “Phoenix is the best fit for him” and he was going to speak it into existence.”
The blockbuster trade didn’t happen, and it became clearer than crystal that the Lakers stopped seeing Lonzo as the player Lavar built his company around – which he claimed is worth 3 billion dollars and would surpass Nike.
However, we’d be wrong if we said Lavar’s nonsensical vision was impossible.
LaMelo Ball is projected to be selected in the first round in the NBA Draft. For years he’s played above his size, age group and skill cap. He has intangibles that many NBA players wish they had now let alone at his young age. In fact, he’s the youngest American to ever go pro. LaMelo has a chance to give his dad more credibility his next prophecy.
But again, that’s what Lonzo did, so the same risk will follow LaMelo.
Regardless, LaVar Ball will continue to say things. If he says enough things, he’ll be able to call some of them predictions, and no matter what people say, he will continue to push forward unapologetically to make his dreams a reality because he actually cares about his sons that much.
