Byron Center’s Kristina Baar gears up for summer ball after losing junior season - MLive.com

Don’t be surprised if Byron Center junior Kristina Baar is ever overheard saying that her dad has the coolest job on the planet.

Jeff Baar has been the assistant clubhouse manager with the West Michigan Whitecaps for the past nine years. So what has been the best part about spending summer days and nights as a kid at Fifth Third Ball Park?

“Dippin Dots,” laughed Baar, who added that meeting all the players is pretty awesome, too.

Baar has a big fan in her father, too, and he said he is proud of her. Baar continues to have a perfect record when it comes to pitching. The Byron Center righthander went 10-0 as a sophomore on the mound a year ago, and that’s what her record will be next spring after all sports were cancelled this spring due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Baar helped the Bulldogs capture the OK Green Conference championship last year, and she was one of five returning varsity players who was eager to help the team defend. She had 95 strikeouts while walking 12 in 71 innings.

“She never had any formal training until basically her sophomore season,” Jeff Baar said. “It was self-taught in the front yard with me and her brother playing catch, and she is pretty proud of that.

“She is tall and skinny, and I think people underestimate her because of her stature. But she can really throw it, and she has great movement on the ball. She is 5-9 now, and she is getting that work ethic as far as working out and getting stronger. She is coming into her own. Her body is catching up to her talent and the two are working together.”

Baar will finally get a chance to suit up this weekend. She plays for Elite, and the travel team will be headed to Toledo, Ohio, for a tournament. Baar enjoyed a big summer last year with the Elite 15-and-under team, posting a 14-2 record.

“To finally get a chance to play is exciting, and hopefully, we will get a chance to play here in Michigan, too, soon,” she said.

Baar’s goal is to play at the collegiate level, and she said missing an entire season doesn’t help. But she is confident that that won’t stop her from realizing her dream.

“That was really was big," Baar said about losing her junior year. "But I’m still working out and pitching every couple of days with my dad, and that really helped out. Working out has helped.

“But I really miss my teammates and playing with my teammates and my coaches, obviously. We always have fun at practices and going to tournaments.”
