Howard County Executive Calvin Ball Statement on the Death of George Floyd - scotteblog.com

County Executive Calvin Ball released the following statement following last week’s killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and subsequent protests around the nation throughout the week and over the weekend.

“I am deeply saddened and outraged about the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The loss of life through acts of violence and racism continue to fuel feelings of anger, frustration and calls for action throughout our community and country.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic highlighting disparities in our health system, the inequitable treatment has also been forced in the spotlight. We have continued to witness unacceptable traumatizing events and acts of racism rooted in hate that incite fear and division.

While some of the most egregious in recent memory, the unjust killings of George Floyd, AhmaudArbery, and Breonna Taylor are the latest victims of unlawful and fatal acts of brutality. For centuries, our country has struggled with instituting human rights that affirm the inherent dignity of all.

As a county that prides itself on inclusion and civility, it remains our responsibility to collaborate, encourage and create an open dialogue to improve race-relations and institute changes that enhance the quality of life for all. Change will only come locally if we work to encourage our friends and neighbors to do the same. I stand firm with our community and every person working to build a better future in Howard County, the State of Maryland, and in our country.

Every individual deserves the ability to live their lives free from fear of violence because of their race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age or creed. United, we can eradicate hate, fear, and violence within our communities. When we collectively work towards the same goal of ensuring our community is safe, resilient, and empowered, we can ensure that our current and future generations will thrive.”

Tomorrow, at 4:00 p.m., beginning at the Mall in Columbia and ending at the Columbia Lakefront, County Executive Ball will join Howard County residents in a peaceful march and rally for justice.

Here is additional information on the march and rally for justice planned for tomorrow:  On June 2nd at 4pm Youth Collective will host “Hoco For Justice Vigil & March” to stand against white supremacy and mourn the lives of George Floyd and Tony McDade
