Liverpool finally won the Premier League title. On Thursday, the Reds won it for the first time since it was renamed in 1992, producing the team's most impressive league campaign in modern history. The title-clinching match actually happened with the Reds watching at home. Manchester City lost to Chelsea, clinching the crown for the boys from Anfield. This title is Liverpool's 19th league crown.
Following a season where the cub won the Champions League, Liverpool managed to dominate England, clinching the title with seven matches remaining on the schedule.
Here are five things to know about Liverpool's title run:
1. It's the team's first Premier League title
Technically speaking, Liverpool had never won the Premier League title. Liverpool's last domestic top-flight title came in 1990. From 1888 to 1992, the league was known as the first division where Liverpool won it 18 times. Since it was renamed the Premier League back in 1992, the Reds had not won it, coming close on multiple occasions.
So in a sense, this is the team's first Premier League crown.
2. Knocks the notion of being a 'cup team'
Thirty years ago was when Liverpool last won the league title. That was eight years before Trent Alexander-Arnold was born. Since then, Liverpool has been viewed as a "cup team" by most, and it's easy to see why. Since last winning the first division during the 1989-90 season, the team has won three FA Cups, four EFL Cups and two Champions League titles. A team built to win the tournament format but not able to sustain a long season, in other words. That has changed under manager Jurgen Klopp with incredible attacking ability, smart signings and fantastic depth.
3. Klopp's tenure couldn't be more successful
Since Klopp arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2015, he's won the Champions League, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and, now, the Premier League. That's four trophies over the last two seasons. Mission accomplished. Klopp, when he arrived in Anfield, said he wanted to win a title within four years. How does four trophies in five years sound?
While you can unrealistically say his tenure could be better if the Reds could've defended their UCL this year (they got eliminated in the round of 16 by Atletico Madrid), teams hardly repeat in that competition unless your name is Real Madrid.
He deserves an A+ grade for all that he's accomplished.
4. Dominance should continue
The team's squad depth is incredibly stacked and the Reds aren't going anywhere. There is no sure-fire starter in this team over the age of 30, most of the players are in their prime and they have numerous players 25 years of age or younger. For that reason, including continued signings, it's realistic to expect this team to continue to contend for league titles for years to come. While we could see some big names depart on huge offers, you can expect equally big names to arrive. This club is built to contend in every competition for the foreseeable future.
5. Last year might've been even better
There is no doubting that the 2019-20 season was a massive success, yet it does fall short of last season... by a tad. There is a big difference in winning the Champions League compared to winning the Premier League, but that's not to take away from this current campaign. The Reds are producing one of the most dominant Premier League title seasons we've ever seen, and this will be one of the most remembered seasons for fans -- even though they had to wait an extra three months for the title due to the coronavirus pandemic. Winning Europe is as big as it gets, but winning the league is a close second. Doing it in consecutive seasons? That hasn't been done since Manchester United pulled it off a decade ago.
