That’s when the Winner girls basketball standout received her third Division I scholarship offer, but this one is the biggest to date. Swedlund landed an offer from Big Ten Conference member University of Illinois, which was her first from a Power Five conference school.
Swedlund said it’s her goal to play for a Power Five team and felt relieved to secure her first offer from one.
“That’s the goal and for Illinois to take a chance on me this early, that really showed me a lot,” Swedlund said. “When I called my dad (Tresh), I could almost hear it in his voice that he wanted to cry. He was so happy. I was just smiling ear to ear all day.”
It was Swedlund’s second offer last week. She also received an offer from Montana State University on June 2. Swedlund’s first offer came from Colgate University (New York) in July, 2019.
Swedlund is a 5-foot-9 guard for the Warriors. She was a first-team Class A all-stater this past season after averaging 20.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game.
The junior-to-be has been in contact with between 40-to-50 college basketball teams within the last year. She plays AAU basketball for the South Dakota Attack.
The Attack -- like every other AAU basketball team -- had its spring season halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The summer portion is expected to heat up and that’s music to Swedlund’s ears.
“This is a big summer,” Swedlund said. “They nickname it the junior summer. It’s when things really start to kick off. It was a little scary and anxious with the COVID and not knowing what’s going to happen and no summer ball. That’s just crazy to me. So when things really got going, it was very relieving.”
The Attack is scheduled to play in AAU tournaments later this summer, including the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chicago, Illinois.
Swedlund hopes to make a college decision before her senior season. She intends on taking advantage of her five official visits this fall.
She’s keeping all her options right now and said finding a school that feels like a second family is important to her.
“I am ready to see what the future holds,” Swedlund said. “There’s so many different schools and so many different atmospheres. I guess I just have to find the one that fits me.”
