Nashville SC’s bad luck with COVID-19 continued on Sunday as five players reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus since landing in Orlando for the MLS is Back tournament, according to a report from The Athletic.
Nashville SC declined to comment on the report.
Per The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal, one Nashville player tested positive upon arrival and four more tested positive after. The first player tested positive on a retest and the other four are awaiting follow-up results.
This comes just days after the club’s initial flight to Orlando on Wednesday was delayed after a member of the team tested positive, forcing everyone to get re-tested before finally departing on Thursday.
Nashville hasn’t practiced since Tuesday and its opening match against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday may be in jeopardy. MLS postponed FC Dallas’ group stage match against the Vancouver Whitecaps after nine Dallas players tested positive upon arriving in Orlando.
There are currently 29 players listed on the Nashville SC roster. Should the club be without the five players in question, it would not be allowed to fill those roster spots during the MLS is Back tournament.
MLS’ last reported COVID-19 testing update (July 3-4) listed two new positive tests — both players — of 1,191 players, coaches, referees, club staff and league staff.
