Weather permitting, Longmont’s mosquito control contractor will begin spraying five areas of the city after mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus have been found in Fort Collins.
The five “hot zones” to be sprayed by Vector Disease Control International, according to a notice on Longmont’s West Nile information website — www.LongmontColorado.gov/WestNile — are the Sandstone Ranch, Union Reservoir, Great Western/Mill Village, Left Hand Creek at Creekside, and Longmont Meadow View areas.
The city’s website also includes a link to a Vector Disease Control map of those areas — tinyurl.com/yxj8kvp9 — along with other parts of Longmont that aren’t scheduled to be sprayed Thursday night but could be sprayed in the future, depending on where mosquitoes are found.

Longmont typically notifies residents of planned Thursday spraying by posting on its West Nile website on Tuesdays.
Vector Disease Control maintains a database of Longmont residents who have requested notifications that their neighborhoods are to be sprayed or that are asking the company to shut off its spray machine while passing those people’s homes. People can sign up via the company’s website, tinyurl.com/yythcdpf or by calling 970-278-9977.
Boulder County Public Health officials urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves. They advise remembering “the four Ds”:
- Use DEET-enhanced insect repellant or an alternative.
- Dress in long sleeves and pants.
- From dusk until dawn, avoid the outdoors.
- Drain standing water outside the home, such as in birdbaths, outdoor planters, or tires stored outside.
