LaMelo Ball and Zion Williamson were in the media spotlight when they were in high school. Pretty soon, Ball will join Williamson in the NBA, and the two will get the chance to play against or with each other. A few years ago, the two played against each other during an AAU tournament that brought out a big crowd.
At the time, Ball and Williamson were two of the most talked-about high school players.
In high school, LaMelo and Zion took the social media world by storm
Ball and Williamson are used to having the cameras on them. In Ball’s case played on a Chino Hills High School team that featured his older brothers, Lonzo and LiAngelo. Lonzo, a senior, was the star on that team, and LiAngelo was a junior who led the team in scoring. That was LaMelo’s first year of high school basketball. The three Ball brothers led Chino Hills to a perfect season, becoming the No. 1 ranked high school team in the country. Even though he was a freshman, LaMelo started on that team and contributed in a big way. As a sophomore, LaMelo took his game to another level, becoming more of a scorer and displaying his ball-handling abilities as a point guard. Highlights of his performances went around social media, and he started to gain a lot of attention.
Williamson started to gain notice during his sophomore year when videos of his in-game dunks took the internet by storm. People wanted to know who this kid was in high school, dunking the way he was. During his high school career, Williamson dominated the games that he played, showing his strength and athleticism. He was a man amongst boys out there on the court, and no one could stop him. The spotlight continued to follow Williamson throughout his high school career, and there were NBA players who to notice who he was.
Now, Williamson and Ball had different paths beyond their high school career. Williamson took the typical path and finished his four years of high school, went to Duke for a year, and is now with the New Orleans Pelicans. LaMelo took a different approach. He became a professional after his sophomore year of high school and went overseas. A year later, he would end up finishing his senior season at Spire Academy in Ohio and then go play in Australia. Now he’s one of the top prospects in the 2020 draft.
The one game that Zion and LaMelo played each other in
In 2017, many spectators gathered around one court to see Williamson and Ball play against each other at an AAU tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first time people saw two of the top high school players go at it on the court. According to an article from Bleacher Report, multiple NBA players like Jamal Murray, Damian Lillard, and Andrew Wiggins were in the stands to see the two play.
SC Supreme defeated Big Baller Brand 104-92. Williamson finished the game with 28 points, and Ball finished with 31. Williamson and Ball gave the crowd what they wanted to see and a preview of what to come when they are in the NBA together.
Zion and LaMelo will reunite again in the NBA
With the NBA draft set for October 16, 2020, many wonder where LaMelo Ball will go. But one thing is for certain, and that is he will hear his name called that night. When Ball starts his NBA career, he’ll reunite with Williamson at some point during the season. NBA fans will have the opportunity to watch two players who were rock stars in high school now battle each other in an NBA game.
Many people will look forward to that matchup. One thing about Williamson and Ball is that they never let the media or fame get to them. They are focused on being the best player they can be, and they will look to have a long and successful NBA career.
