MUNCIE, Ind. — The number of Ball State University students who have tested positive for COVID-19 through the school's partnership with IU Health has increased to 33 — out of 64 tested since Aug. 17.
IU Health is only testing people who have COVID-19 symptoms.
The numbers were posted Wednesday night on BSU's COVID-19 dashboard, which now also includes positive cases the university has received from other sources, primarily self-reports.
Those cases total 110 additional students, but "some of the students who have self-reported never came to campus because they tested positive before classes started," BSU spokesperson Kathy Wolf said. "Others who have tested positive are following the recommended protocols for isolation."
More than 14,000 students have registered for on-campus courses this at Ball State this fall. That’s down about 10% to 15% from recent years because the school transitioned more than 25% of courses that are typically on-campus to online to reduce the number of students on campus, Wolf told
Only four positive cases have been reported among employees, one through IU Health and three from other sources.
Ball State says its decision-making process in response to the virus is being based on the number of new and existing cases, availability of testing, availability of health care for those who need it, contract tracing capacity, availability of quarantine and isolation space, personal protective equipment inventory and state and federal mandates.
Around 5,400 students are living in Ball State residence halls, 13 of whom were in isolation on Thursday morning. "This is well less than 0.5% of the students living in the residence halls," Wolf said via email.
Another 37 residence hall students are in quarantine (after exposure through close contact with infected persons).
"So we presently have ample capacity to isolate and quarantine residence hall students," Wolf said.
She declined to identify any of the numerous on-campus and community sites the university has contracted for quarantine and isolation.
"Out of respect and concern for the privacy of individuals who are and may in the future be quarantined or in isolation in these spaces, will not be sharing additional details about the specific locations," she went on.
President Geoffrey S. Mearn said in a recent talk that the school was in the process of contacting local motels for extra space.

Earlier this week, Ball State's dashboard reported 18 positive cases out of 40 students tested, in contrast to the latest numbers of 33 positives out of 64 tested.
Purdue University's dashboard on Thursday indicated 68 students and eight employees have tested positive since Aug. 1. Its dashboard includes the number and percentages of students and employees testing positive since Aug. 1 and in the past seven days, and also contains a bar chart of daily results of number of tests and positive cases.
Indiana State University's COVID dashboard on Thursday reported 84 students with active cases in isolation either on or off-campus, and another 124 students in quarantine after close contact with positive cases.
Since Aug. 3, the University of Notre Dame has had 496 positive cases, including five employees. Notre Dame is keeping undergraduates out of classrooms until at least Sept. 2. The Notre Dame dashboard also provides a daily trend bar chart.
If a Ball State student's health care provider determines that a student is symptomatic for COVID-19, the student may be tested through the IU Health partnership.
However, if a student has been advised to be tested but does not have symptoms, there are other testing options available, according to the BSU dashboard, which states:
"The state of Indiana provides a list of testing options. Be sure to contact the testing site before you go to make sure you meet the criteria for testing. Now that the semester has begun, the University is working to provide additional testing options on campus. Appointments are first come, first serve." It then lists times and dates when walk-in testing will be available for Ball State students at Scheumann Stadium.
