Five community nonprofits find new space, support on Marygrove campus - Crain's Detroit Business

Marygrove Conservancy is launching a new incubator for community-based nonprofits on its northwest Detroit campus.

Five nonprofits chosen for the pilot phase of the new incubator are moving into their new spaces and have started goal-setting and round-table conversations with leaders of the surrounding Fitzgerald neighborhood.

Built in partnership with Strategic Community Partners, the incubator is providing the five groups with office and programming space on the Marygrove campus and support, including monthly intensive sessions with content experts, technical assistance, access to professional consulting services and opportunities for professional development.

The five community nonprofits are:

  • Detroit City Lions Youth Club, which helps at-risk youth develop healthy bodies and minds through sports, tutoring, mentoring, leadership development and wraparound services for families
  • Detroit Phoenix Center, which was forced to close its drop-in day center and resource site for homeless and high-risk youth between the ages of 13 and 24 in March when its landlord shuttered the building as the pandemic hit the region
  • Detroit Youth Choir and Performing Arts Co., which gained national attention last fall with its appearance on "America's Got Talent" and a $1 million pledge from local funders to support its programming
  • Journi, which provides immersive courses and youth-centered programming in technology and entrepreneurship to help jump start careers
  • Pure Heart Foundation, which works to empower and embrace children of incarcerated parents to help break the cycle of generational incarceration by providing access to mental health care and counseling, mentorship, academic support and recreational activities

"In the midst of COVID-19, so many small businesses and organizations have been hit hard and are facing economic uncertainty. At the same time, we are experiencing a changing social climate, fighting for greater racial justice and equality. These two different events have really been a catalyst for the Community Impact Incubator," said Marygrove Conservancy COO Racheal Allen in a new release.

Organizations are at risk of shutting down because they may not be able to afford rental space, she said.

"The Marygrove Conservancy can provide support by offering space in one of our campus facilities. Beyond that, we can help train more leaders of color and grow the network of offerings for our community."

Newly named Executive-in-Residence Rita Fields is facilitating the incubator program, meeting with the nonprofits monthly and serving as a mentor for the leaders of each.

Fields, the new chief talent and strategy officer at Oakland County nonprofit Lighthouse, is also CEO of 313 Industries, a contract machining and manufacturing corporation, and Copper Phoenix Consulting LLC, which provides talent and operations management expertise.

A Marygrove alumna, she brings nearly two decades of consulting experience in the business, human resource, nonprofit, health care, and educational sectors.

Each nonprofit leader will participate in a training program tailored specifically to their organization's mission and the needs of the community it serves. These leaders identified several strategic areas in which they need support; in response, the conservancy created a curriculum that will provide the specific resources and training needed to further scale their services. This tailored approach is intended to strengthen nonprofit leaders of color while also providing key services to communities that may not normally have equitable access to them.

Even as it launches the pilot cohort for the incubator, the conservancy is already prepping for the second phase, focusing on food entrepreneurs and bringing locally sourced, healthy food to campus, a spokesman for the organization said.
