Five Mid-Penn girls tennis players to watch in 2020 - PennLive

bolaboladulu.blogspot.com

Though the start of fall sports in the Mid-Penn Conference has been delayed, the beginning of the girls tennis season is still right around the corner.

Most teams are set to begin their seasons on Sept. 14 with renewed hopes of grabbing a conference and district championship. The conference has several top girls tennis players who should be in the hunt for plenty of postseason hardware by the end of the campaign.

PennLive has put together a list of five girls tennis players that should shine in the upcoming season. While this is just a look at five players, expect many more to have standout years and compete among the best in the region.

Below are five players, listed alphabetically by last name, to watch in the 2020 girls tennis season:

Mid-Penn Conference girls Class 3A tennis finals

Caroline Corcoran, Hershey

Class: Senior

Buzz: Hershey is coming off a season in which it won the Keystone Division for girls tennis, and with Caroline Corcoran leading the way, the Trojans certainly seem poised to be in a position to fight for the division again in 2020. Corcoran had a big year for Hershey, finishing third in the Mid-Penn Class 3A first singles championship and third in the District 3, Class 3A singles championship before reaching the state tournament. If not for the next name on this list, she might have been even higher in both the aforementioned championships. She also, along with fellow star player and now-senior Sam Bogush, reached the Mid-Penn Class 3A first doubles finals and placed second.

Sarah Guistwite, Carlisle

Class: Senior

Buzz: Carlisle’s Sarah Guistwite has established herself as one of the most consistent threats in the conference. She has won a Mid-Penn singles championship in back-to-back years, winning the first singles last year and third singles back in 2018. Guistwite also paired with Meg Ulrich to win the Mid-Penn doubles championship a season ago. On top of all that, Guistwite was one of the best at the District 3 championships, finishing second in the Class 3A singles before advancing to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Now in her final campaign with the Thundering Herd, Guistwite will certainly have her eyes fixed on a district gold and to make it farther in states.

Mid-Penn Conference girls Class 3A tennis finals

Lindsey Johnson of Northern plays singles. The Mid-Penn Conference girls Class 3A tennis finals are held at the Hershey Racquet Club, October 9, 2019. Dan Gleiter | dgleiter@pennlive.com

Lindsey Johnson, Northern

Class: Senior

Buzz: Lindsey Johnson made her path to the third singles Mid-Penn gold medal look easy. The Northern York senior lost just one set in her bracket on the way to the win. Johnson was also a part of a strong doubles unit with Halee Taylor that was Northern’s representative in the Mid-Penn District Doubles bracket and that had an impressive first round before running into a difficult Palmyra doubles pairing that was seeded third. As one of the seniors for the Polar Bears, Johnson should be one of the leaders on the team and should be a name to watch with another season ahead.

Mid-Penn Conference Class 2A girls tennis finals

Ava Lewis of East Pennsboro plays in singles. The Mid-Penn Conference Class 2A girls tennis finals, held at East Pennsboro High School, October 8, 2019. Dan Gleiter | dgleiter@pennlive.com

Ava Lewis, East Pennsboro

Class: Senior

Buzz: There aren’t many tennis players that have enjoyed the same success that East Pennsboro’s Ava Lewis has had over the past two seasons. She is a back-to-back first singles Mid-Penn Class 2A champion and reached the District 3, Class 2A finals as the No. 1 seed before finishing second in the bracket. Lewis then made it to the Class 2A state championship bracket where she wound up placing fourth as a junior. Coming off two straight impressive campaigns as one of the best players in the conference, Lewis should be even better in 2020 and could make a serious run at a state title.

Mid-Penn Conference Class 2A girls tennis finals

Sahara Sipple of Trinity plays in singles. The Mid-Penn Conference Class 2A girls tennis finals, held at East Pennsboro High School, October 8, 2019. Dan Gleiter | dgleiter@pennlive.com

Sahara Sipple, Trinity

Class: Junior

Buzz: The battle between Lewis and Sahara Sipple for last year’s Mid-Penn Class 2A first singles gold was a good one, and there’s a good chance it’s a matchup tennis fans will get to see again in 2020. Sipple returns to the Shamrocks after an impressive sophomore campaign in which she was the runner-up for a Mid-Penn title and where she reached the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 2A singles tournament. Sipple also paired with Sadie Rieg, another player who should have a big year for Trinity, to win the Mid-Penn doubles championship at Class 2A before the pairing reached the semifinals of the District 3 doubles tournament and finished third overall.
