Five Of The Biggest Falsehoods Of The Third Night Of The Republican Convention - Forbes

TOPLINE

On the third night of the GOP convention Wednesday, Republicans repeated a host of falsehoods about President Trump’s actions as president and misleading claims about Joe Biden’s record on key issues such as China.

KEY FACTS

In an emotional speech in which she described her decision to have a preventative mastectomy, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany stated that Trump "stands by Americans with pre-existing conditions” — his administration is asking the Supreme Court to strike down the Affordable Care Act, including its provisions requiring health insurers to provide coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, and has repeatedly supported legislation that would weaken Obamacare protections, though this month the president said he planned to issue an executive order on pre-existing conditions.

Jack Brewer, a former NFL player and member of Black Voices For Trump, claimed it was a lie that Trump said “very fine people” attend white supremacist rallies: following violent protests by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, Trump equated them with the counter-protests during a press conference, saying, "But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides."

Seeking to portray the administration as having acted decisively and effectively to stem the spread of coronavirus, Vice President Mike Pence touted Trump’s travel restrictions on China during the beginning of the pandemic, though public health experts say early outbreaks in some parts of the country were seeded by travelers from Europe; additionally the vice president claimed, “No one who required a ventilator was ever denied a ventilator in the United States,” when in fact hospitals across the country reported shortages of ventilators and some resorted to jury-rigging them so they could be used with two patients

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y), a rising star in the Republican Party, falsely described Trump’s impeachment trial as “illegal” — impeachment is a process detailed in the Constitution.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) accused Democrats of wanting to defund "our military, our police, even ICE” — while a small number of Democrats have said they support “defunding the police,” Biden has said he does not.

Surprising fact

Republicans made several historical errors Wednesday. Lara Trump, Eric Trump’s husband, recited an apocryphal quote she attributed to President Abraham Lincoln: “Abraham Lincoln once famously said ‘America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.’” And Madison Cawthorn, a GOP congressional candidate, said that James Madison “was just 25 years old when he signed the Declaration of Independence." Madison did not sign the Declaration of Independence.

Crucial quote

“If the Democrats had their way, they would keep you locked in your house until you become dependent on the government for everything,” Blackburn said. “That sounds a lot like Communist China to me — maybe that’s why Joe Biden is so soft on them. Why Nancy Pelosi says that ‘China would prefer Joe Biden.’” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) never said she believes China prefers Biden. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Pelosi talked about an intelligence report that found that China prefers Biden over Trump that was released earlier this month. “The Chinese, they said, prefer Biden over — we don’t know that, but that’s what they’re saying, but they’re not really getting involved in the presidential election,” she said, without saying directly that she supports the claim.
