TAMPA — It’s almost time to fill-out the line-up cards and hear the umpire yell “Play ball!’' on Hillsborough County’s baseball and softball diamonds.
The county shut down its fields for games and tournaments in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Several weeks ago, the county began allowing baseball and softball leagues to return to the fields for practices and conditioning, but no competitive games.
That’s about to change with the county announcing this week a process for youth and adult leagues to resume games.
To receive permission to play games on county-maintained fields, each league must submit a plan, requiring approval from the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department, outlining the social distancing, sanitation, scheduling, and other measures leagues will use to assure the safety of players, volunteers, and fans.
Baseball and softball leagues can submit the plans for review at PRK-Fields@hillsboroughcounty.org. Parks officials will review and get back to the league with changes or approval.
County leaders said they made the decision to allow the resumption of baseball and softball games and tournaments after extensive consultation with local health officials, emergency managers, Parks and Recreation staff, league officials, and others.
But the resumption of games is not universal to all sports, and some parents are advocating for football players and cheerleaders to be included.
“We’re going to allow college and high school football, but not youth football and cheerleading?” lamented parent Charlene Linscott.
Hillsborough County commissioners, meeting Thursday as emergency managers, did not publicly respond to her request.
