WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 2, streaming now on Netflix.
The Umbrella Academy's second season finds Five (Aidan Gallagher) at his wit's end, going through a few plans to try to not only stave off yet another apocalypse in 1963 but to also get his family back to 2019. After failing to get the team together for a briefcase jump arranged by the Handler (Kate Walsh), though, Five comes up with one last Hail Mary play, and oddly enough, it leads to his biggest battle in the series so far -- with an older version of himself.
Five reveals the plot to Luther as he figures that if he can get the temporal briefcase back from his older self -- an assassin from the Time Commission sent to kill President Kennedy -- he can jump to the past using the right calculations, effectively stopping both apocalypses. However, he notes that there will be paradox psychosis as two versions of a person shouldn't be that close in proximity to each other.
As Luther finds Five pouring baby powder on and hydrating, it's clear Five believes this is the only way out. He reveals the side effects of meeting oneself include denial, itching, extreme thirst and urination, excessive gas, acute paranoia, uncontrolled perspiration and lastly, homicidal rage. Eventually, as Luther brokers the deal at a bar, hoping for a more diplomatic solution, the older Five convinces the leader to help him take the kid version out so they can instead jump to 2019 and befriend Vanya so she's stopped from destroying the world. Sadly, Luther buys in as this would mean the JFK assassination is prevented, and his original timeline and family would be healed.
But as they gather outside the grassy knoll, both Fives immediately sense deception from the other and the homicidal rage kicks in after little Five kicks Luther in the nuts. It's a comedic scene set to Generation X's "Dancing with Myself," continuing the show's clever musical style, as both Fives make quantum leaps, kicking, punching and dodging each other's blows.
It comes to a head when Luther shows why he's Number One, knocking older Five out with his own gun after realizing he can't betray his brother. However, as much as kid Five seems to have won the confrontation after all the mental and physical sparring, the older Five gets a huge advantage thanks to Diego. Kid Five tells the older version the correction to the time-travel formula he initially botched (which is why he got stuck in his childish body) but when Diego tossed a fire extinguisher through the portal from Season 1 outside the mansion, it knocks Luther out, allowing the older Fives to tussle over the briefcase again.
This time, though, as Luther recovers, he's had enough and kicks older Five through the rift, ready to celebrate the win. But younger Five calls him stupid because the briefcase has been damaged thanks to Luther's antics, making the fight count for nothing. This leads to younger Five eventually rallying with the family to fight off Lila and the Handler at Sissy's farm when they go to save Harlan, so in essence, while Five's plan with himself might not have come to fruition, he did have a bit of luck on his side that still led to them getting home.
Streaming now on Netflix, The Umbrella Academy Season 2 stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min, with Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh and Colm Feore.
