Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns will examine how the University is handling the COVID-19 pandemic September 18 during the first broadcast of “Cardinal Compass: Campus and Community Conversations.”
President Mearns will be joined by Provost Susana Rivera-Mills during the 30-minute program, which is set to air on Indiana Public Radio and WIPB-TV at 6:30 p.m.
Each month, the 30-minute program will feature President Mearns and his guests, who will explore and discuss connections between Muncie and Ball State. Future shows will focus on Ball State’s partnership with Muncie Community Schools and the University’s relationship with the Muncie and Delaware County community.
Students from Ball State’s College of Communication, Information, and Media produce, host, and edit the program as part of an immersive learning project in partnership with University Media Services.
“This is a great opportunity to have our students work with President Mearns on various issues that the community will find interesting,” said Terry Heifetz, a senior lecturer in Ball State’s Department of Telecommunications who is serving as the show’s executive producer. “President Mearns has been a great partner with the show. His interactions with students could not be better. He provides praise and constructive criticism in a positive and productive way.”
Heifetz said his students have adjusted to physical distancing and other changes while producing the program
“The whole class that produces the show can’t meet at once because there are so many people involved,” he said. “We had to move the show to a different location to allow for physical distancing. And, all of the guests and hosts have to sit six feet apart. But despite the challenges, the students have done a great job adjusting to new situations.”
Viewers will get an inside look at how the University operates, said Ball State senior Tylor Brummett, a senior Plainfield, Indiana, who is studying telecommunications and journalism. He co-hosts the show with Lilly Cederdahl, a senior from Carmel, Indiana, who also is studying telecommunications and journalism.
“I'm so excited for this project and for the people in the Delaware County community to see it,” Brummett said. “I'm get to tell stories and inform viewers of what they need to know.”
