INDIANAPOLIS — T.Y. Hilton probably won't make an excuse. He'll likely say he should have caught the ball, just like he did last week when he dropped two crucial passes in Jacksonville.
But Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said Sunday's drop, the one in the end zone on a gorgeous deep ball from Philip Rivers, might not entirely be his star receiver's fault.
With the roof open at Lucas Oil Stadium, the sun played a part.
"Ninety-nine percent of the time, it's not going to be a factor," Reich said of the sun at Lucas Oil Stadium. "And I think it was that 1% T.Y. looked up at the wrong time and caught the ball in the sun and at the last second he just lost it."
The drop cost the Colts a 44-yard touchdown. Instead of seven points, three plays later, the Colts were forced to punt.
T.Y. Hilton generally speaks to the media on Thursday.
Reich explained Monday that he had a feeling the sun might be a factor if the roof was open. During one of their scrimmages at Lucas Oil Stadium a few weeks ago, a couple of Colts had issues fielding punts while looking into the sun.
That stayed with Reich, and before Sunday's game, he told the Colts coaches who'd be in the booth to keep track of where the sun was during the game. He even considered saving that particular play call for when the Colts were going the other direction on the field.
"(I knew) T.Y. would have to look back into (the sun)," Reich said. "You can try and plan for it, but we just felt like that was the perfect time to call it. And we just had to take our chances."
Unfortunately for the Colts, Hilton dropped his third pass in two weeks. Fortunately for him, this one didn't end up costing the Colts a chance at victory. Still, Hilton is probably beating himself up for the drop. It took him days, Hilton said, to get over the drops in Jacksonville.
“I watched both of the plays about 70-plus times, just trying to see what I did wrong, what happened," he said last week of the drops vs. Jacksonville. "The first one, I caught it, put my two feet down, I turned, ball came out — just fluke stuff. And then the last play, I think I just missed it. I missed it."
Despite Hilton dropping big passes two games in a row, Reich said he has zero concern about his star receiver going forward.
"I'm not worried about T.Y," Reich said. "He's the last guy I worry about."
