GIBBON, Neb. (KSNB) - One time.

That’s how many Friday nights out of 18 that Gibbon left the field as the winning team the past two years.

In 2020, they’ve completely flipped the script.

“Coming off of a couple seasons like we’ve had, the kids have responded in a way that hasn’t really seemed to bother them," Gibbon Football Coach Jeff Montgomery. "They’re getting to a place where they know they can win, and they are expecting to win.”

After this past Friday’s victory over Hershey, the buffaloes have walked off the field with three wins in three tries.

“The past two years it had been rough, practice wasn’t much fun," Senior Quarterback and Defensive Back Matt Weisman said. "The last few weeks it’s been so much fun getting to practice and always feeling like we have a great chance to win the game, and feeling confident going into the game.”

The 3-0 turnaround all started off the field this offseason and has snowballed in the right direction from there.

“In the offseason we had a bunch of guys showing up to the weight room, that’s where it all kind of started," Weisman said. "We changed the way we lifted, and it has transitioned into our practices.”

“We’re really happy with the guys and their effort," Montgomery said. "They’ve done what we’ve asked them to do and they deserve the wins that they have gotten so far.”

All it took was a little taste of success to turn the tide.

“We know how to win now and just the difference it’s made to our team is amazing,” Weisman said.

Now the undefeated Buffaloes are experiencing excitement and support from the community and the school that the players on the team never have before.

“The past few years it was like, ‘well how bad are we going to get beat this week?’ and now it’s like ‘do you guys have a chance?’ and we all say yeah we have a good chance - and everybody will get excited,” Weisman said.

“It has definitely been an experience - I mean it’s something we’re not really used to," Senior Running Back and Linebacker Sean Hampton said. "It’s just been great because a lot of people are finally believing in us, you know?”

Unfortunately for the football team, the school was two boys over the enrollment cap to compete in the C-2 playoffs this season.

However, that’s not stopping them from leaving their mark.

They get Bridgeport at home this Friday in a battle of the undefeated. We will have the highlights on the Local 4 Fifth Quarter.
