LaVar Ball has been outspoken ever since his son, Lonzo, was selected second overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. Now, his younger son LaMelo Ball projects to be a top five pick at this year’s draft.
The Ball family’s patriarch joined the “Road Trippin” podcast back in July that LaMelo will not be a good fit with the Golden State Warriors, who own the No. 2 pick. LaMelo spoke to the media on a conference call during the opening day of the 2020 NBA Draft Combine and disputed his father’s comments.
“My old man, he’s his own man. He has his opinions, I have mine,” LaMelo said. “I feel I could play on any team and do good anywhere I go, so anything that happens, I’m positive. Anywhere is a great fit. I mean, it’s the NBA. You put me with good players; I feel like it’s even going to be better.”
Ball played 12 games in the Australian League last season and averaged 17.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.8 assists. The 19-year-old will need to work on his shooting and shot selection. LaMelo connected on 25% of his 3-point attempts and shot just 37.5% from the field overall.
Golden State has plenty of options on what to do with the pick, but the team is reportedly leaning towards taking a wing. LaMelo is a ball-dominant guard who has good playmaking skills. With Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson already on the roster, Ball would have to adapt his game to fit with the team.
