One season for Indiana football is already over before it even began. With Indiana scheduled to open up their season on October 24th against Penn State at home, they’ll be without one defensive starter.
Head coach Tom Allen announced that starter Marcelino Ball was lost for the season due to injury. The redshirt senior safety was expected to be a key cog for the Hoosiers defense in 2020.
Allen announced the news on Monday afternoon.
“Allen says veteran defensive starter Marcelino Ball has been lost for the season with an ACL injury. Big loss for #iufb,” Mike Pegram tweeted.
In 2019, Ball had 47 total tackles, 29 solo tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and two pass breakups. In 41 career games, Ball logged 201 total tackles, 142 solo tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three interceptions, 16 pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
As a member of the Class of 2016, Ball was a three-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was the No. 145 overall prospect in the state of Georgia, the No. 106 overall safety prospect in the class and the No. 1,606 overall prospect in the class.
Allen talked about the challenges of preparing for a season where there have been so many stops and starts during the off-season.
“I think that is something that we are still working through,” Allen said when asked about a plan for practice earlier this month. “I have been in contact with some of the guys that have been practicing and asked them and gotten their feedback, and I have watched and known how teams have done it a certain way.”
When the Hoosiers first started Fall Camp last month, one of the biggest concerns was how much contact they could have in practice because of the risk of transmitting COVID-19, but with the new testing that is available, that is no longer an issue.
“One thing that is different…before there was a huge concern with your players having contact with each other…now, we will know that when we are out there practicing that all of our guys are negative,” Allen said. “They will not be allowed to practice (if they are positive). It is a daily test and results will be back in 15 minutes. If they have a positive test in the morning before practice, they are not going to be out there. That makes you feel better about that contact with your guys.”
The biggest issue Indiana and other Big Ten teams will face is how much live tackling can they do since the players have not had a typical off-season of strength and conditioning workouts.
“The other part of it that you have to really, truly balance is how much is too much,” Allen said. “No matter how you look at this, everyone has had a modified preparation. It has not been full months of training like you have usually had. The injury piece is what you are really trying to balance. How much hitting is too much? You do not want to beat yourself up and lose guys for games because of that, but if you do not have enough, your kids are not ready to play a Big Ten football game.”
Indiana is scheduled to open their season at home at home against No. 10 Penn State on October 24th.
