Ke’Bryan Hayes already was having the best game of his young major league career, so the Pittsburgh Pirates were rooting for the rookie third baseman to make it even more memorable in his final at bat.

Hayes lined a double to right-center field in the ninth inning to complete a 5-for-5 performance at the plate as the Pirates beat the Cleveland Indians, 8-0, Saturday night at Progressive Field. The Pirates (19-40) got their third shutout of the season and snapped the Indians’ five-game winning streak. The season finale is at 3:10 p.m. Sunday.

“I was really hoping he would get a hit. Very few opportunities to go 5-for-5 in your career, regardless of how long you play,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said of Hayes. “So the fact that he went up, didn’t try to do too much, gets the double into right-center. It just speaks to how this guy’s approach is really just maturing. It’s cool to see. Five hits in a game, man. There’s not a lot of guys who can do that. And to do it as a rookie, (23) games into his big league career, that’s pretty cool.”

Hayes boosted his batting average to .370 with three doubles and two singles, becoming the 12th Pirates rookie to get five hits in as many at-bats in a game. He joined the likes of Hall of Famers Paul Waner, Arky Vaughan and Roberto Clemente, as well as Western Pennsylvania products Dick Groat, John Wehner and Neil Walker.

“To be able to get five hits at the major league level is really special for me,” Hayes said. “All the hard work that I’ve been putting in with my swing change and stuff of that nature, it feels really good.”

After scoring only four runs in Joe Musgrove’s first seven starts, the Pirates doubled that production as the right-hander notched double-digit strikeouts for a second straight start. Six days after getting a no-decision despite striking out 11 in six scoreless innings in a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, Musgrove (1-5) had another double-digit strikeout performance by fanning 10 Indians in earning his first win in his final start of the season.

The Pirates scored all eight runs on 10 hits off Cleveland starter Aaron Civale (4-6).

Musgrove became the first Pirates starter with double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back starts since Francisco Liriano in 2015, when he had 12 against the New York Mets on May 24 and 11 at the San Diego Padres on May 29. Musgrove also became the first Pirates starter with back-to-back starts of six scoreless innings and at least 10 strikeouts since 1901.

“(To) really focus on getting the first guy out in the inning takes a lot of pressure of you, it allows you to flow better,” Musgrove said, “and when your offense puts up runs like they did tonight, it takes a lot of pressure off and allows you to go into attack mode and really just challenge guys.”

Musgrove retired the final 13 batters he faced, throwing 108 pitches in seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk. Musgrove threw 73 pitches for strikes, mostly mixing his curveball and slider with a four-seam fastball to get 20 swings and misses. He ended four innings with a strikeout, including the final three batters of the second.

“The fact that the breaking stuff plays and it plays up. The ability and trust in the execution of the pitch,” Shelton said. “I think it’s a testament that his breaking stuff is really good and we have to make sure that he uses it.”

Hayes also scored three runs. In the first, Hayes doubled to right and scored on Colin Moran’s single to left for a 1-0 lead. Jose Osuna gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the second when he went opposite field for his third home run, a 356-foot liner to left.

Hayes hit a leadoff double to start the third, advanced on Moran’s groundout to first and scored on Josh Bell’s single down the right-field line for a 3-0 lead. Bryan Reynolds followed with a 407-foot shot to left for his seventh homer and a 5-0 lead.

Jacob Stallings and Hayes singled in the fourth, and Moran followed with a 425-foot three-run shot to right for his 10th homer and an 8-0 advantage. Hayes got the single in the ninth to finish an amazing feat: He saw 15 pitches, taking six balls and four called strikes and getting hits in his five swings.

“You don’t see that very often,” Musgrove said. “He’s really dialed in at the plate right now. You hear him in the dugout after an at bat saying that he’s so lost and he can’t find it and feels like he’ll never get a hit again and then you watch him go 5 for 5 the next day, it’s fun to watch. He’s a really fun player and I’m really glad he’s on our side.”
