“It felt really good, because in our first match we lost to Valley City State in five sets,” Dickinson State head coach Jennifer Willis said. “I am really proud of the girls for finishing strong.”

The Blue Hawks hadn’t seen the court in over two weeks due to a match being postponed due to COVID-19, but they played sharp in the win.

Dickinson State (1-1) had three players with double digit kills as Baylie Dashner led them with 15, Abby Moerkerke totaled 13 and Mackenna Johnson totaled 12.

“We like to have a lot of aggressiveness at the net,” Willis said. “It was nice to spread the ball around and the offense. There wasn’t a go to hitter tonight and we shared the love with everyone.”

Viterbo did have a couple girls out, and Dickinson State capitalized after falling behind early.

The V-Hawks went on a run in the middle to end of set one to close it out, but Dickinson State didn’t get down on themselves.

Trying to close out the match in set five, things started off hot for the Blue Hawks.

They took a 5-0 lead out of the gate, but they then tried to shoot themselves in the foot.

Seven of Viterbo’s points in the final set were due to Dickinson State not being able to put the ball in play off the serve.

“We need to serve the ball at practice on Monday for sure,” Willis said. “I think some of it was the first home game jitters at the serving line. I was proud though because when we needed an ace, we got one.”

The V-Hawks rallied to tie the winner take all set at 11, but Dickinson State showed grit closing it out.

“It was a really solid team win,” Willis said. “There isn’t one player that stands out above the rest. They all played together as a team and they all did their job.”

Dickinson State hosts Waldorf on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
