Boston Red Sox center field prospect Jarren Duran will play in Puerto Rico for Los Criollos de Caguas this offseason, the winter ball team announced.
Red Sox coach Ramon Vazquez is the manager of Caguas.
Baseball America ranks Duran the Red Sox’s No. 5 prospect behind Triston Casas, Bobby Dalbec, Jeter Downs and Bryan Mata.
Duran, who turned 24 in September, has off-the-charts speed that allows him to extend doubles into triples and singles into doubles. But he also added some power throughout the past year by adjusting his swing mechanics and adding muscle.
Duran has batted .322 with a .376 on-base percentage, .446 slugging percentage, .823 OPS, eight home runs, 38 doubles, 19 triples, 73 doubles, 142 runs and 70 stolen bases in 199 minor league games (880 minor league plate appearances in 2018 and ’19.
He was in great shape during spring training. He arrived at the alternate site in better shape after the coronavirus shutdown.
“Thanks to my dad who’s a gym freak,” Duran said this summer. “We already had a weight room in our garage. So I was able to work out like two times a day, every day. I’d take some days off. But I just wanted to make sure I was in the best shape possible so if I did get a call, I would be ready to go. ... I was taking it seriously twice a day, every day, making sure I was staying in shape so I could come back stronger, faster. Make sure I could stay healthy.”
PawSox manager Billy McMillon recently said about Duran, “He had an unbelievable offensive camp. Stole a lot of bases, hit a lot of home runs. Impacted the baseball hard day in and day out. I think he continues to get better in the outfield and as that continues to get better, I think that’s going to help clear the path for him. He’s okay, he’s solid, but you can see there’s some room for improvement there. We did some things working on footwork and routes to balls and he kind of cleaned that up a little bit. For me, the question is, can he do that consistently? If he hits a lull with his offense, is he going to stay as positive as we was all camp? I never saw him down during the camp. He hit really well for the entirety of the camp. He’s a very intriguing, very interesting guy.”
