The First Athletic 2020-21 Event At Ball State Is Cross Country - BallStateSports.com

By: Ball State Athletics

Sports are back at Ball State. A cross country meet Friday will get the Cardinals back in the game as the Ball State cross country team will host a three-team women's meet against conference competition Friday at the Muncie Elks Golf Club.

"We're just super excited to be back," head coach Brian Etelman said. "We're fortunate to have leadership to support this opportunity and we feel incredibly grateful to have the people we have leading us every day. It's a wonderful time to get back to it. At the end of the day, this is what it's about - helping our team have the chance to compete."

NCAA Diving Zone Championships on March 12 was the last time any Ball State Cardinal competed at all, and that event was not completed. The last completed sporting event for Ball State was a women's basketball game in Cleveland on March 11. For this team to be the first for Ball State to compete in 232 days, it came with a lot of emotion. Etelman says some on the roster haven't competed in 13 months. Yet, the principles of the program on and off the course held steady and the Cards can now compete knowing they did things the right way.

"The team was excited, and probably had a little bit of nerves too," Etelman said. "We knew at some point we were coming back to compete, it was the when, where and the how that was up in the air. But the notion of competing was never in question. I think for the team, it's a sigh of relief. This is a tough sport and you want to be rewarded for what you put in. And it's awesome for our team to be rewarded for what they do."

The Cardinals will host Miami and Ohio at 3:30 and then the men's teams from Miami and Ohio will run at 4:15. In the 2019 MAC Championships, Miami placed third, Ball State sixth, followed by Ohio in seventh. Three BSU runners who competed in that race - Cayla Eckenroth, Emmalyne Tarsa and Juliana Stogsdill - are on this year's roster. Several freshmen this year are expected to be among the top runners this year as well.

With all that it took to get back to competing, Etelman is thrilled for the chance to compete and for this fall's hard work to finally see some results.

"I think the first success is the gun going off and the meet starting. That in and of itself is worthy of celebration," Etelman said. "But we're here to win. We don't do this just to participate - we do this so we can compete at a high level. I think we're going to measure the results like we would any other time. If we're good, great! If we have more work to do, we'll get better and we have three-and-a-half weeks to prepare for the MAC meet. We're ready to roll - we're excited about it."
