WooSox introduce mascot ‘Smiley Ball’ during celebration at Worcester City Hall on World Smile Day - MassLive.com

On World Smile Day, a walking, baseball bat-swinging, round yellow smiley face walked out of Worcester City Hall. Pharrell’s hit song “Happy” played on a small boom box as Smiley Ball walked down the steps to Worcester Common and introduced himself to the city.

The Worcester Red Sox celebrated the debut of their mascot, Smiley Ball, with a series of events Friday, which began by greeting City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. Mayor Joseph Petty and Medical Director Dr. Michael Hirsh. All three are Harvey Ball honorees this year. Smiley Ball visited honorees throughout the day.

At the ceremony at city hall, mascots from other professional sports teams like Trax from the Worcester Railers and Paws from the Pawtucket Red Sox helped welcome Smiley Ball home.

Charlie Ball, the son of Harvey Ball, who created the iconic smiley face, also participated in the festivities on World Smile Day.

“People have simply embraced [World Smile Day]," Ball said. "For me to see that, it’s amazing. What a tribute to my dad.”

The WooSox celebrated Smiley Ball’s “birthday” on Friday to coincide specifically with World Smile Day. Not only did Harvey Ball design the smile, but his son said he also launched World Smile Day.

“A day like today is an amazing event for me," Ball said. "I clearly don’t get tired of it. It grows every year.”

Ball said World Smile Day will likely be seen by one billion people as the tradition continues.

Ball said 2020 holds even more significance as the world battles a global pandemic. He hopes everyone has an opportunity on Friday to share a smile, even for a few seconds.

“There are plenty of people who woke up this morning and they weren’t feeling particularly happy," Ball said. "But it’s better that we all smile, reflect and move on from there because in the end we’re all better for it.”
