By: Ball State Athletics

Six standout for the class of 2021 - three pitchers and three position players - have signed during the early period to play baseball at Ball State. Hunter Dobbins, Nate Dohm, Cayden Gothrup, Jacob Hartlaub, Zac Jones and Grant Miller will all join the Cardinals in the fall of 2021.

Dobbins, from Indianapolis, was all-conference and all-county as a sophomore at Mt. Vernon in 2019 when he batted .380 and was voted Mt. Vernon Hitter of the Year. He also helped his team to a sectional title in 2018. In the summer, his 17u Indiana Nitro club was among the state's best.

"Hunter is a physical catcher/third baseman with power potential, strong arm and high ceiling," Maloney said.

Dohm is a big right-hander from Zionsville, Indiana. As a sophomore in 2019, he pitched 19.2 innings and struck out 23. Dohm played three summers for the Indiana Bulls club. He was picked for the WWBA National Championship All-Tournament Team and posted a 1.50 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 37.1 innings. He was selected to play for Team Indiana, a traveling squad that competes against the nation's best. He was also selected all-tournament at the PBR Indiana State Games. Off the field, he boasts a 3.7 GPA and has volunteered many hours at local organizations.

"Nate has a power arm with the makings of good break stuff," Maloney said.

Gothrup, a lefty from nearby Daleville, Indiana, owns a 3.25 ERA with 99 strikeouts in high school. He also pitched a no-hitter and three complete games. He led his team to a 22-9 record and a state title as a freshman in 2018 and a sectional title in 2019. In the summer of 2020, he played for Indiana Bulls White. He also plays basketball and competed in cross country.

"Cayden has a good arm, blue-collar work ethic and loves to compete," Maloney said.

Hartlaub, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was his conference's player of the year as a sophomore in 2019. Hartlaub's summer ball accomplishments include being named to the 2020 Perfect Game All-American Regional Team and various Perfect Game all-tournament teams in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He also played football for Martin Luther, where he was all-conference and his team's defensive MVP.

"Jacob is a multi-sport athlete with a good fastball and good upside," Maloney said.

Miller, an infielder from West Chester, Ohio, was a varsity starter in Ohio's toughest region as a sophomore and was named his team's top defensive player. In summer ball, he stole 50 bases and was an all-tournament team pick at the Youth Baseball National Tournament in Mississippi. He also played in the All-American Games in 2017. He also played soccer as a freshman.

"Grant is a gritty, dirtbag table-setter and plays with a chip on his shoulder," Maloney said.

Jones plays the left side of the infield for Stoney Creek High School in Oakland Township, Michigan. A 3.85 GPA student, Jones was voted his team's best defensive player. Jones played the last five summer ball seasons for Legends Baseball Club.

"Zac is an athletic middle infielder and a good runner with a strong arm and good instincts," Maloney said.

These six players will join a Ball State baseball program that has produced eight first-round draft picks and 11 picks in the first three rounds. Ball State has placed a first- or second-round draft pick in the MLB Draft in each of the past two seasons. BSU has a winning percentage of .580 since 2013 and has gone 77-54 over the last three seasons.
