MUNCIE, Ind. --
Ball State University student-athletes continue to set records in the classroom, this time with a new graduation rate best according to the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released Tuesday, Nov. 17.In the latest report, the Cardinals' student-athletes recorded an institutional-record Graduation Success Rate of 90 percent. The total is four points higher than last year's report and a 23-point increase from the numbers released in 2013-14.
"We are incredibly proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes reflected in this record graduation success rate," Ball State University Director of Athletics Beth Goetz said. "It is a credit to the commitment and hard work of our student-athletes, faculty, and staff. Graduating our athletes is our top priority, and their first step in the journey to fulfilling careers and meaningful lives."
The latest numbers represent scholarship student-athletes over a six-year period starting with freshmen that entered college in 2013. All of Ball State's 17 teams (cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field count as one team for this report) either matched or improved their scores from last year.
In addition, six programs boasted a 100 percent graduation rate: Men's Golf, Men's Swimming & Diving, Men's Volleyball, Women's Swimming & Diving, Women's Tennis and Women's Volleyball.
The announcement of the record-setting GSR follows a 2020 spring semester which saw Ball State student-athletes earn a record 3.32 term grade point average. In addition, the Cardinals' most recent single-year departmental Academic Progress Rate (APR) was a record 991, with 13 teams achieving a perfect score.
The federal graduation rate, which is less inclusive than the GSR and released alongside those numbers, provides the only measure of historic academic comparison between student-athletes and the general student body. Using this standard, Ball State student-athletes graduated at a department-record 76 percent in the latest report, which is 11 points higher than last year and 10 points higher than their Ball State peers.
Overall, nine out of 10 student-athletes who started college in 2013 across all NCAA Division I programs earned a degree. It's the highest rate ever and an increase of one percentage point over the rate for students who entered school in 2012.
