BOBCAT CALENDAR: Eddie Sullivan Extended a 100-yard Receiving Streak to Five Today in 2004
November 13
SPOTLIGHT: Montana State's most recent game on November 13 in history came 16 years ago, and resulted in a memorable - if disappointing - day.
Facing Eastern Washignton in a crucial game in Bobcat Stadium, the Bobcats jumped out to a 24-10 halftime lead, and led 31-10 less than a minute into the second half. But no lead felt safe on this day, and behind superstar quarterback Eastern Washington was just getting rolling. The Eagles outscored MSU 41-13 from that point on, and after scoring on their first possession in overtime stopped the Cats on a fourth-and-goal to seal the win.
Many, many words could be poured into describing that day, but one of the day's interesting sidelights was buried under the avalanche of statistics and tinged by the disappointing defeat. Bobcat receiver Eddie Sullivan caught 11 passes for 143 yards against Eastern that day (Travis Lulay completed 33 passes for 432 yards), the fifth and final 100-yard receiving game of his career.
But amazingly, all five of those games came in succession to form the second-longest streak of 100-yard days by any pass-catcher in Bobcat history.
It was an amazing stretch of games for Sullivan. He accounted for 140 yards on October 16 against Portland State, 137 on October 23 against South Dakota State, 139 against Northern Arizona, and 135 against Sac State before the 143 yard game against EWU. The next week in Missoula Sullivan caught three passes for 48 yards, but mostly - like everyone else - watched in amazement while Rick Gatewood caught 13 passes for an incredible 235 yards. In the game before the streak started, Sullivan caught four asses for 51 yards against Weber State.
Bobcat coach Mike Kramer will never be described as pass-happy, nor will his offensive coordinator from 2001-06 Don Bailey. Circumstances often force compromise, though, and a rash of defensive injuries in 2004 led to some high opponent scoring totals, and that in turn led to some crazy offensive numbers.
During Sullivan's five-game streak of 100-yard games, Montana State 190 points, including a 60-point effort at NAU and the 44-point game vs. EWU. Two of the games (Eastern and Portland State) went to overtime.
The individual numbers were even crazier. Lulay threw for at least 300 yards in each of the five (and again in the finale at UM), totaling 2,002 yards in those five games. And while Sullivan went over 100 yards receiving in those five consecutive games, so did a lot of others. Gatewood did so four times, Blake Wolf logged his only career 100-yard day, and Chaz Guinn also eclipsed the 100-yard mark.
Here's a better bit of context: in those five games, 11 Bobcats had at least 100 yards receiving in a game. In Montana State's 203 games since, the program has accounted for only 57 100-yard receiving days.
Here is Montana State's single-season 100-yard receiving game records list:

FINIS: College football rivalries certainly weren't then what they are today in this part of the country, but one can imagine that Fred Bennion got some special satisfaction from leading Montana State to victory over Utah State. That happened for the final time today in 1915, when the Cats beat the Aggies 7-0 in Logan to close the season. Montana State had whipped Utah State 42-0 in Logan the year before, Bennion's first season in Bozeman after arriving from a successful coaching tenure at Utah. In his final two games against the Aggies Montana State would earn 7-7 and 17-17 ties. Bennion, one of the great Utah Ute players in the program's early years, finished his time at Montana State with an 11-7-5 record. Prior to his arrival the program had only one winning season in the previous six.
