The annual Daily Breeze ball drive kicks off this week, marking the 21st year for a tradition that has delivered roughly 23,000 sports balls to young people at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor.
In 2019, the ball drive had its biggest year ever, generating more than 3,000 balls — footballs, basketballs, soccer balls — for the thousands of children who attend the clubs.
With so much going on in the world today between the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and a presidential election, it would be easy to forget about the annual ball drive.
Who won’t forget, however, are the children who look forward to receiving a cherished sports ball for the holidays. In fact, the pandemic has made the need for kids to get outside and play sports greater than ever before, said Mike Lansing, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor.
“With the change to distance learning, our members are required to be in front of their screens for up to seven hours a day, which leads to physical inactivity,” Lansing said. “Going outside and being active is essential to the mental and physical well-being of our youth right now.
“That’s why this year’s ball drive is probably more important now than it’s ever been before,” he added. “Something as simple as playing ball helps them cope with their new normal.”
Playing with sports balls has been proven to have a variety of benefits for young people, such as improved coordination, physical activity and communication skills. They also give kids a reason to be outside and away from a computer or smartphone.
“Working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor on the annual sports ball drives is among the most rewarding things we do each year,” Tom Bray, Daily Breeze senior editor, said in a written statement. “The pandemic certainly complicates the landscape this year and we know there are many more households in need. Each year, South Bay residents have shown incredible generosity and we hope this year, however more complex, will be no exception.”
In light of the pandemic, collecting sports balls for this year’s drive will bring special challenges. The Daily Breeze, for example, is not going into the officer, where it previously received ball donations. Instead, our community partners, UNIFY Financial Credit Union and First Bank, have stepped up to provide drop-off locations. Balls can also be purchased at a 25% discount and contributed to the ball drive at various Big 5 Sporting Goods locations in the South Bay.
Contributions can also be made in the form of sports balls and/or cash donations directly to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor. And balls can be ordered online and sent to the club’s San Pedro location, 1200 South Cabrillo Ave.
Every year, the ball drive relies on our generous readers to make the holidays special for thousands of children in need. For all the years of support, we truly thank you.
