LaVar Ball dispels potential game against Michael Jordan - 247Sports

The rumored basketball challenge between LaVar Ball and Michael Jordan is apparently off the table. Ball dispelled any plans for a one-on-one encounter with the Pro Basketball Hall of Famer and six-time NBA champion.

According to TMZ, Ball noted that both he and Jordan are too old to compete. He mentioned at his Thanksgiving giveaway in Los Angeles that the pickup game is not happening.

“Realistically, neither one of us is gonna do this,” LaVar said. “We over 50!”

LaVar previously stated that he could beat Jordan on the court. He told USA Today in 2017 that he would be able to score efficiently against the Charlotte Hornets owner.

“I would just back (Jordan) in and lift him off the ground and call a foul every time he fouls me when I do a jump hook to the right or the left,” Ball said in the USA Today article. “He cannot stop me one-on-one. He better make every shot ’cause he can’t go around me. He’s not fast enough. And he can only make so many shots outside before I make every bucket under the rim.”

The rumored game gained traction recently after Jordan selected LaVar’s son, LaMelo Ball, as the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Given that LaVar would attend his son’s games, it opened the possibility for a potential one-on-one game.

It also led LaVar to re-issue the challenge before his latest revelation that the matchup will not happen.

Jordan initially did not respond to Ball. However, he did release a statement back in 2017 that he felt LaVar could not beat him.

“He played, I think, college, maybe? He averaged, like 2.2 points a game,” Jordan said. “Really? It doesn’t dignify an answer, but I’m going to give it to you because you asked the question. I don’t think he could beat me if I was one-legged.”

As for now, Jordan has focused on building the Hornets roster for this season. LaMelo is a standout point guard that is slated to earn starting minutes. He will work alongside two emerging stars in Devonte Graham and PJ Washington.

Jordan also shocked the NBA landscape by signing Gordon Hayward in free agency. The NBA veteran will become the leader of a young Hornets team that is looking to have a winning season for the first time since the 2015-2016 campaign.

While fans may never see LaVar vs. Jordan on the court, LaMelo did mention his thoughts on the whole ordeal. He did not pick a side but had an idea of how a potential game would go in a hypothetical sense.

“I think we know how it would turn out, to be honest,” LaMelo said. “Well, I mean it is my pops and my boss, so I’m on both sides now.”
