"Recruiting through the COVID-19 pandemic created some new challenges for us, but I couldn't be more thrilled with the five women who took a leap of faith and committed to playing for us here at GW," Rizzotti said. "This class is versatile, competitive and high character, and I can't wait to get them in GW uniforms."
Andrea Daley
6' // F // Miami, Fla. // Miami Country Day
Daley becomes the first Floridian to don the Buff & Blue since Shannon Cranshaw and Hannah Schaible graduated in 2017. She earned Second Team All-State and First Team All-County honors as a junior, averaging 12.8 ppg and 8.1 rpg while advancing to the state semifinals with national powerhouse Miami Country Day. She also previously earned Honorable Mention All-County recognition as a sophomore and competes on the Nike EYBL circuit with the Miami Suns.
Coach Rizzotti on Andrea: "Andrea fits the mold of many of our highly successful forwards of the past. She is an elite athlete who creates easy offense both with her defensive rebounding and her ability to run the floor, offensive rebound and get us layups. I can't wait to watch her grow her outside game at the college level and become a matchup nightmare."
Taylor Golembiewski
5'8" // G // Columbia, Conn. // E.O. Smith
A First Team All-State honoree in 2020, Golembiewski has improved her stats each year at E.O. Smith High School, culminating in averaging 12.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 3.9 apg as a junior. Golembiewski helped her team to its second straight Central Connecticut Conference tournament title in 2020, achieving All-Conference honors for the second straight season. Golembiewski also has competed for the Connecticut Attack on the AAU circuit.
Coach Rizzotti on Taylor: "What we loved from the beginning about Taylor is that she is a dynamic guard who is equally effective as both a facilitator and a scorer. She loves to play at a fast pace on both sides of the ball, and I look forward to watching her dictate our pace of play when she arrives."
Sophie Haydon
6'3" // F // Shorewood, Minn. /// Minnetonka
Haydon will join fellow North Star State native Maddie Loder on the GW roster. Her junior season wrapped up in the section finals after averaging 11.3 ppg and 8.9 rpg for Minnetonka High School. Haydon has served as a captain on her team each of the last two years while achieving All-Conference status each year. She has already accrued four varsity letters entering her senior season and competed on the Nike EYBL circuit with North Tartan.
Coach Rizzotti on Sophie: "We are excited to add another player from Minnesota to the roster. Sophie is a tough post player with a terrific combination of physicality and finesse. Her skill set and high IQ are a perfect fit for how we like to use our post players, and she will be able to facilitate a lot of the actions we like to run offensively."
Michelle Ojo
6' // F // Virginia Beach, Va. // Princess Anne
After moving to Virginia Beach from North Carolina, Ojo has continued her high school career at one of the most successful women's basketball programs in the state in Princess Anne. Ojo returned from a broken foot in March to help push the Cavaliers to their 12th consecutive state championship appearance before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season early. Originally from London, England, Ojo has twice been named to the All-District team and is rated as a three-star recruit and the #14 wing in the country per ESPN HoopGurlz. She finished her club career with Boo Williams of Nike EYBL.
Coach Rizzotti on Michelle: "We set out to recruit versatile players in this recruiting class, and that's exactly what we got with Michelle. She is a special player who handles the ball like a guard and yet can score in the paint. She's another player that allows us to play more in transition and create matchup problems for the defense."
Leila Patel
5'10" // G // Frisco, Texas // Frisco Centennial
Patel fits the mold of GW's recent wings, providing height and versatility at the position. She burst onto the scene for Frisco Centennial High School, earning District Newcomer of the Year honors in 2018 and team offensive MVP honors. She followed that up with All-State and All-District designations as a sophomore before surpassing the 1,000-point threshold this past year. Patel was named the offensive MVP of her team for the second time in three years en route to her second straight All-State and All-District honors. She played for Texas U on the Under Armour GUAA circuit.
Coach Rizzotti on Leila: "With Leila, we add a shooter with size. She comes from programs that are used to winning and understands how to impact the game in different ways. She is a player you can't leave open on the 3-point line, and has an attitude and love for the game that is infectious."
"This signing class really is emblematic of the phrase 'only at GW,'" Rizzotti said. "They are five really talented players who will complement each other so well on the court. More importantly, they are extraordinary young women, from five different states and backgrounds, who share the common goal of wanting to become great players and great people in the World's Most Powerful City. We can't wait to watch them finish up their high school careers and get to GW to rep the Buff and Blue!"
